  • well, that'll teach me to back-up religiously (schadenfreude fodder enclosed)

If I may be so bold to suggest forget buying Parted Magic and use the http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/. Follow the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery. DO NOT try and fix the failing drive as you will reduce your chances of success. The data recovery page will have you make an image of the failing drive. The more errors on the drive the longer the image will take. Even something as small as a 2TB drive can take weeks to image. From there you can work on the image.

  • What was the most awkward place you worked from?
    G Glenn_Y

This doesn't compare to some of the others but it sucked none the less. Back in 1994 I was working in a Cyber café that had internet terminals and Virtuality VR games. I had to support the pc's, network, Virtuality machines (Amigas) and the clients. People had just seen the movie Disclosure with Hollywood VR and were irate because they didn't see themselves in full realtime 3D when playing Dactyl Nightmare. People were much more ignorant of technology back then and didn't understand.

  • A Language Without Conditionals
    G Glenn_Y

No, no second coming. I did 6 years of O* programming with a VB front end. I liked it and they had plenty of great ideas but it was a closed system. Objectstar was the DB, the programming language and the problem reporting system all rolled into one. It allowed you to rewrite ANY of the programming language as well, gave you the option to fix anything. The programming environment was done in a 3270 terminal emulator so the coding window was small. if I remember correctly you were limited to 5 conditions, 40 lines of code and upon saveing the code you were obliged to add a comment to explain what it did. Looked something like this.

    variable1 > 3 | Y N
    variable2 > 5 | Y Y N

    some code to execute | 1 1
more code to exectue | 2
    still more code... | 2
    still more code... | 1
    call another chunk of code| 3 3 3

Objectstar did have conditionals, it just wasn't with if-then-else, do while, etc. You put in an evaluation and if it was true or false executed certain lines of code. It took a while to wrap your head around but was pretty simple once you had the "a-ha" moment.

  • Multiple browser-window-tab configurations?
    G Glenn_Y

Hi Marc, Maybe I'm missing something but you can bookmark all open tabs as a group using "Add Current Tabs to Favorites". The next time you open your browser you just right click the folder in Favorites and select "Open in Tab Group". Admittedly for each window you would have to select a separate folder to open but it seems like that would meet your needs. This assumes you're using IE. ...the only browser we are allowed in my office (corporate environments are awesome!) :| Glenn

  • Linux?
    G Glenn_Y

I've been running Ubuntu as my main OS at home for 4 years, I mostly use it for web browsing, media and the likes with the occasional C and web development and I love it. Sure occasionally you have to tweak it to get stuff to work but it's pretty good now days. I'm running it on an old Toshiba laptop.

  • Dell unveils exclusive Microsoft-branded Ubuntu OS

Because it's 8.04 LTS where LTS stands for Long Term Support. To quote from the Ubuntu site "With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge." http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu
