I think there's a typo and the 2nd one should be "*" rather than "'*'" ? Thanks, it's not feasible to replace old software on all customer sites. Adding the manifest file and setting the reg key below to make it be used gives us an option in case Microsoft decide not to fix it. • Are headphones safe?
    J JamesA_Dev

I thought I'd mention that in the end I went for Sennheiser HD 202 at £26.48 These isolate quite well allowing lower volume listening. Not a scientific measure, but 20% Master Volume as opposed to about 50%. As well as being more comfortable than in-ear phones, it's a lot easier for people to notice that you're wearing them. So you can make a slight improvement without spending a lot.

If you've decent phone software, you can get an alert to flash on your screen when a call is coming. We haven't got this though...

I do own some ear muffs for DIY. Maybe I should try those. The problem with these is I find the muffled sound odd. I don't actually want to listen to music; it's just far less distracting. I also forget to mention that it's not an agile setup where people are talking about things you might actually be interested in. Some nice pink fluffy ear muffs might get the message across, but might get me taken away by men in white coats ;)

That's the problem with having rubbish earphones at the moment: you start at a low level but the volume creeps up as the people get noisier.

  • Are headphones safe?

Our office is open plan and noisy. The developers find themselves listening to headphones a lot of the day. I'm concerned about the long-term damage to hearing that could be caused. I'm thinking of either upgrading to some better noise cancelling headphones, or just live with the noise and limit my listening to a certain amount of time a day. Does anyone have any knowledge on this sort of thing? From my little knowledge the damage is a combination of the sound level and the time. If really good headphones were purchased that allowed the music to be listened at low volumne would this take the risk away? (In the medium/long term I think the office layout is to be changed).

  • What performance indicators are you judged on?
    J JamesA_Dev

Managers/Directors/Auditors like to see a number "4 out of 5" or "80% performance". It's difficult to measure these things. Are these things any more than just an indicator to look further into it? A developer who misses the deadlines 50% of the time may be doing it to actually ensure the code is high quality before it goes out. Your code may fail lots of silly little tests and seem unreliable whereas someone's may fail one big test and not really work at all but percentage wise rank higher. I agree that TDD and coding standards and reviews helps software quality. This will raise the standard of development as a whole. How do you decide who deserves the best pay rise though...

  • What performance indicators are you judged on?
    J JamesA_Dev

What key performance indicators (KPIs) are you judged on? It's often said that KPIs for developers don't work. I tend to agree and think in the end it has to be judged by a human with at least basic software development knowledge. I bet in a lot of places, it's how many times you laugh at the boss's jokes :) Which ones do your company use, and are they useful?

  • Should I rotate(swap) my screens?
    J JamesA_Dev

:) That's how things seem to work here, and I imagine people break their stuff on purpose. On a serious note, with global warming it would be better to make screens and pcs last longer. My other concern is that you might not notice the screen had gone slightly wrong and be doing your eyes in.

  • Should I rotate(swap) my screens?
    J JamesA_Dev

I've got dual monitors and generally the right one is the main one with therefore more white on it. Do people think it's work physically swapping them around every few months so they get equal wear? I suppose this would be like the concept of rotating your tyres on your car, but a lot easier to do.

  • Anyone successfully moved from windows app dev to web developer?
    J JamesA_Dev

Can anyone here offer any advice, having successfully moved from developing windows apps to web development? I know it's an old question, but technologies change. I'm currently using C++ MFC / C# win forms for a thick client app. There's nothing similar locally only web jobs, so I'd be in trouble if this company went under.

Many adverts quote "XML" as a skill required. What does this actually mean? Isn't this like putting "text" as a skill  Is this a buzzword just put on there by managers? You put it on your CV because people expect it to be there, but what are they actually expecting you to know?
