On Android, the ringer volume control is independent of the media volume control. So tapping the volume widget to take it to 'silent' will still play videos with sound - same as what you describe.

I sometimes try to scroll in Outlook's preview pane and find the text becomes smaller because it thinks I'm also holding down Ctrl. Maybe you have the same issue with Excel thinking the Ctrl key is pressed? A Ctrl Alt Del should fix it, if that's the case.
