Hi I am having no luck in finding some way (or tool) that will allow me to import an Oracle DMP file into SQL DB or convert the file into some form that will allow me to recreate the Oracle DB on the SQL DB (Only the schema is needed, so not working with data) Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated. • Dynamcially including DLL Libraries
    J johncogan

I have a simple CMS system whose admin interface is run through a single DLL which controls everything for managing the CMS data. Using VB to code it all. What I was interested in knowing is if secondary DLL can be dynamically included. How I wanted to do this is have the main DLL check for the existance of a DLL in the BIN directory and if it does exist the add "bolt-on" functionality to the admin interface. TIA John Cogan

  • Configuration issue regarding bin directory.
    J johncogan

Hi The online tutorial I took the code from was in two parts. The first part demonstrating the codebehind (with inherit) method. The second part was using the Src attribute instead of the former and the path in the code example was <%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Src="WebForm2.aspx.vb" Inherits="WebForm2"%> with no indication that WebForm2.aspx.vb should be in the same directory as the calling script. As the codebehind version of the code had the compiled version of WebForm2.aspx.vb in the bin directory i assumed the uncompiled version of WebForm2.aspx.vb to also stay in the bin. Obviously there was errata or ommisions in that regard. Anyway, I now know that is not the case, lesson learned ;)

  • Configuration issue regarding bin directory.
    J johncogan

Hi My fellow collegue has setup a server with ASP.NET (on win2000) etc and all seems to be running fine apart from one small thing. My test page that uses codebehind to access a file in the /Bin directory only works if I reference the file relatively. This works: <%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Src="bin/WebForm2.aspx.vb" Inherits="WebForm2"%> Where as this does not: <%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Src="WebForm2.aspx.vb" Inherits="WebForm2"%> Its as if the system doesnt know that it is meant to look in the bin directory for the file. Is this meant to be a setting in the global web.config file (which strangely doesn't exist) or in the local web.config file (which I added for my test app) or am I on the wrong bus all together?

  • Bulk emailing
    J johncogan

Hi We are in need of been able to send out an email to 1500+ people at any single time from our webserver. The system needs to be initiated via the browser but NOT requiring the browser to be open while it sends the mails out. The emails will be selected from a ASP search on a SQL db and from there the admin will fill out the email subject and body to be used, click send and thats it. Remember that the emails should be able to be sent without the browser been kept open. We have a Win2000 system with CDONTS, ASPMAil and JMail, all of which dont fill the requirements. I have searched the net unsuccessfully for a COM object or package that can do this :omg:, can anyone suggest any solutions they have heard of please? TIA John

  • XML not rendering properly in IE5.0
    J johncogan

Hi I am having problems outputing XML data in IE5.0. The XML data is written to a Session variable and has an XSLT stylesheet linked to it and I then use Response.Write to output the final sheet of data. The problem is that the data within the XML file is not showing but the layout specifcied in the XSLT file is showing fine, so its liek an empty form. In IE6 the sheet of data shows up perfectly. I was wondering if the IE5's XML parser was rather different to the one in IE6 which causes this problem or if it was some other problem. Amy help at all on shedding light on this would be really great Cheers John

  • ASP/ASP.NET PDF/Word search Obj
    J johncogan

Hi My company has asked me to develop a COM object that would be able to use within ASP scripts using VBScript. The object spec briefly is to allow a search of PDF, word and various other well known document files for keywords passed to the object. My two questions are: 1) Having never done any COM before I need to know whether I should develop this in a Win2000 Server enviornment using C++ or VB (C++ I guess would be better) or if doing it in an XP Prof. Environment using Managed C++ or C# would be the better option. My worries are backward compatibility. The COM object is to be used in ASP scripts only, not ASP.NET so I am assuming to use C++, but I was wanting to avoid the DLL Hell issues I've heard so much about by using the ASP.NET method of the BIN directory for DLL's for development purposes only and then moving the developed DLL across to the Win2000 server... 2) Where can I get documentation that would allow me to know how to get the object to search through these various file types. I am specifically interested in the PDF file format. Any help in this regard would really be great, many thanks. John Cogan

"Telkom" - They are not much different from BT here, thier UK counterpart. They had a two year monopoly on the ADSL technology within the UK, and they buggered up every aspect of the service until recently when third parties were allowed to supply ADSL without having to keep to BT's Terms and Conditions. Ah well, these companies never learn. They could all take a few lessons from Sweden where almost every suburbian household has broadband or fibre-optic running past thier front door. Know a guy there who has a 10 meg fibre connection into his flat, thats just nuts ;) Ah well lets hope things improve for everyone concerned after bush and blair have finished throwing thier weight around... Cheers Paul, I'll contact you should I find myself at a loose end and wanting to move to SA sooner than later. I never know with this company I am at, each quarter brings the fear of redundancy along with the performance figures from the accounts department...;) BTW, Mark ShuttleWorth an OD of BlueGrass ? If so, small world it seems...

Hmm yea, but then SA in general has always been on the conservative side of things in terms of internet commercialisation (Which suggests that experienced web application developers are thin on the ground in SA ?!?). Government there hasnt implemented many plans to increase the usage of internet by your average Joe Soap at home like they do here or in the USA. Companies shedding developers, well that seems to be happening all over. Our company only a few weeks ago (Only has me and one other developer) had a round of redundancies. They were looking to get rid of one developer but after we argued our case they saw the light ;) but there are plenty companies getting rid of excess personell, developers or otherwise. Its like a mini-recession... I heard that they were going to be rolling out ADSL in SA soon as a standard option for broadband, is this true or not 'casue it would mean an increse (I hope) of internal business. With your companies method of doing business, nice job. It sounds like you guys are geared for this remote contracting as it seems to be taking off (if only slowly) more and more. BT for instance has moved most of its call centres to India because they can offer the same level of service at a much cheaper rate. Cant see why it cant work for new media in SA :) Ah well, one or two more years and then back to SA for me regardless of the state of IT, I need sun, boerewors and beach on my weekends ;)

Hi Paul Yea I am based in London myself but am from SA originally. Have been considering going back to SA recently (Been here 5 years too long) and looking for work there but the market aint that good there for localised work unless your an exceptional guru of every technology under the sun, at least thats what I am told... How do you guys manage to secure overseas contracts when based overseas, must be a little difficult to liase with the prospective client?

  • 800a01fb error on Windows2000 Server
    J johncogan

Hi I am suddenly getting this error on pages :( . The error seems intermitant in that the page giving the error sometimes renders fine and on other times falls over. Its also on other pages. My research on the internet came up with the fact that this error is usually caused by not closing ASP objects with SET = myObject = Nothing, but all the scripts used close the objects after thier use. Is there anything else that could be causing this or a solution? Microsofts site as usual came up with nothing helpful. ------------ Error Message --------------------- Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01fb' An exception occurred: 'myOutputRS.Open' /nps/site/envivodisplayAPI.asp, line 516 ------------------------------------------------- Any insight on this regard would really be appreciated. Cheers for this Paul, on thinking on it, I think trying to seperate the two is going to be difficult so will probably have to translate the site into german at a later date. • Metatag content in two languages
    J johncogan

Hi My site in development is using a dynamic system that outputs metatag content and page titles stored in the database for each page, with defaults to catch any situation where no values exist for a particular page. Now the crunch for me here is that the page is to be aimed at two audiences in particular. International and German speaking. Currently it is outputing content in english but I need to somehow reliably determine (using ASP3) if the incoming user (or crawler/robot for that instance) is from a german domain so that meta tag content and page titles are in german. This is especially important (in my situation) for indexing on google.de Or does it not matter in this instance. Cheers for any help in this matter. John

  • Basic questions for the converted but untrained
    J johncogan

Hi Well I bought a book on C# and ASP.NET (Wrox versions) and all looks nice and exciting if not daunting. ASP.NET seems to have sooooo much more happening within it but there were a few questions raised in my mind when looking through them. There seems to be various ways of doing the same thing, IE displaying data in a table. DataReaders, Repeaters etc etc... What confuses me is which methods to use when. For instance, what method to use when displaying tabluar data means using a datagrid or not... How about when you want to display complex HTML data that has a complex layout? (Multiple nested tables)... X| Are there any articles out there that can give someone in my position (coming from ASP3/VBS) a broad overview of what to use when...Or someone kindly take the time to explain it here for me :-D Ta John

  • XML and search engines
    J johncogan

Hi I was unsure if non transformed XML files (ones without a XSL/XSLT file attached to it) are indexed by search engines or not? Also if you have all your dynamic pages rendered by a single file (default.asp for example) which gets its data from XML or SQL or whatever and only the querystring differs, will each differing page be indexed as a different page ? Cheers
