Linux developmentGreat response! Do you have any suggestions for a Linux developer forum/community that I might sign up for?

Linux developmentGood morning guys! I don't post that often over here, but I thought I might give it a try with the following situation I currently find myself in. With the recent cockups MS has been making (NSA, no VoIP support on mobile SDK, End User License agreement questionability etc.), I have decided to take a stab at Ubuntu/Linux. Now I am not an expert on using that OS, but I find myself comfortably using it for the most part and for the instances where I do get stuck, Google usually has my back. I am a 9 years+ experienced .Net developer in C# with some SQL background (for the most part). I want to broaden my horizons a bit and want to start coding some more in C, C++ and maybe a little Java and I think the best way to learn might be to start contributing to some open source projects using Linux as my dev environment, but I have no idea where to start. I have installed Git, Android Studio, VSCode, compiled and executed a basic .Net Core console app, I did a helloworld with C and gcc, but I really want to get to the more gritty C stuff and start learning how the olden gray-bearded ones did/do things. My question(s) is/are this: Is Eclipse still a viable IDE to use, or do you have any better suggestions? What tips do you guys have for transitioning from VS2015 C# .Net to Linux C development? Do you have any open source project recommendations that I might look at as I embark on this new, strange journey? Is the earth in fact flat? I'm really excited, but I am completely lost. :-D Any suggestions would be welcome.

Windows Phone Sales Make Me SadYou have no idea what you are saying. If you had said account, you could register the device as a development device and simply deploy to it for "testing". Same as Android, although they do not force you to get an account to deploy to a device afaik.

Please fire the person in Microsoft that thought the charms thing is okI can agree on that sentiment, but the attack was launched at the general UI design. Servers should stay servers. No way around that. However, seriously, try Windows 8.1 on a tablet/touchscreen. I find myself reaching for my desktop pc's screen more often than not these days, then disappointingly realizing that it doesn't support touch. Don't diss MS on this. Trust them, respond to them, give them time. They do listen, at least, unlike Apple etc. They brought back Start. They released RTM early. They will get there.

Please fire the person in Microsoft that thought the charms thing is okIf you don't know what app you want to use, please turn off the computer and go home. Especially if you installed it.

Please fire the person in Microsoft that thought the charms thing is okYou know, you could just press Windows+C.

There are times that Android is far, far better than Windows...And then there are times when MSDOS is far, far better than Android. Depends on your requirements and expectations. Surface RT was a huge fail, but I think it was a worthy foray into the tablet market for MS. People are just not ready to get rid of the desktop-with-icons UX yet, but I have a feeling that this will change in time. Remember VISTA? What happened to that? The most successful desktop ever launched was built off of it. I will never really fully understand the psyche of those who proclaim one platform over another. Why not choose the one that works for you and shut up about those that don't instead of turning into a religious platform zealot? NO, I am not referring to you with that statement, but to those who do the whole "X is greater than Y" thing in general. I love WIN8 on my ATIV, but I am not telling everyone how Android will never meet their needs, simply because my needs are not theirs.

There are times that Android is far, far better than WindowsYeah you obviously have not given Win8 a try on a decent tablet. Way way way impressed this side. But to each his own, we have a wide world with many spices. :)

Some People Shouldn't Be Allowed to Use a ComputerUse ALT+PRTSCR. Captures only active window. Teach them, it helps. SOMETIMES. :D

Some People Shouldn't Be Allowed to Use a ComputerI feel you. Had that experience a couple times myself. How do these people get jobs? *sigh*
