  • .NET is killing natural of programming from inside !?
    M marc bellario

a problem with .net is that it's almost a complete duplicate of java from top to toe, with some difference, which of course did reduce the java code out there - but now you have two code bases that are only slightly different. real men only code in lisp or haskell, anyway. and real women always use (obj c?) - well, cobol was developed by a woman. if some one ( like oracle ) developed a vm that ran java and c#, that would be an interesting development/but microsoft would sue for $1,000,000,000.00 or maybe 1.5/!/!/!/ Google could buy microsoft and do it, but they are too busy these days making cell phones and they could never merge that culture which would throw a lot of people back into the job market. intel could build a processor that would run c# or java, but only the defense dept would buy it. However, the sad story is that java guys write java, and c# guys write c# and they hardly ever write to each other. actually i don't think .net will kill i.t. we can still find some paper tape readers if we need, too. what could kill i.t. is really good cheap scotch, but that most likely would end badly.

You know, I didn't realize that the nature of this board was mainly questions and answers - So I guess I made an inappropriate entry - My last word is this however - I think that what VC++ today is really a dialect of C++ ( i believe ).... And I think that's an important point of view - since there is such a huge amount of C++ floating around .... And I guess from my point of view it's kind of sad that the language has become this fragmented. Sorry ...........

    M marc bellario

essentially, in the early 90's C++ was standardized over most platforms - closely enough that going from one compiler to the next was a reasonable option and C++ resources worked fairly uniformly - There is so much unique to .net now ( and I'm still not really sure what that it ) and so much unique to the environment that it's hard to know - what is right and wrong - as far as approaches to problem solving ------ It's more of a personal thing I think sort of a nostalgia mostly - I mean in the 90's there were still people around who thought that C++ was a mistake - and that C was really the best way to go .... But - it's about writting code - that can hang in there .... I mean - there's also the group that says - heh ------- we don't need no stinking C++ because Java is okay for everthing - It's really mostly nostalgia .....

In my opinion, C++ was one of the best languages ever developed, with perhaps the exception of Forth, but, my recent experience with the VC++, has left me wishing that there was some intergalactic force that would bring justice to the MS clan..... LFI4DST

  • -- The Truth --
    M marc bellario

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH So here's my sad story ----- I am not an expert on .net - and I will not express any opinion on it other than it vaguely reminds me of "The Empire Strikes Back" But I am in the process of upgrading a small office from XP to Vista. Originally I had purchased the ULTIMATE - upgrade ... and tried unsuccessfully to load it 3 times and gave up figuring that - that's just ridiculous.... So -- step two - I really needed to set up a local SMTP server - thinking it can't be that big of a deal - so I enabled IIS - and but guess what - no SMTP there - so - I start looking for alternatives- and you know what - it's turning into a major hassle -- And people ask me why I - :rose: LOVE :rose: microsoft so much - My guess is I missed the buzz concerning some directions with .net framework - which is supposed to support the SMTP - only I - of course do not want to get hung up searching through what used to be their " - knowledge - " base to try and sort that out .... My question is does anyone have an idea of how SMTP is supposed to relate to the .net framework - or even if there's a better way to "frame" this question ??????? Thanks LFI4DST

  • What backup software do you recommend?
    M marc bellario

this is my NEW recommendation for backup - A - remove cover on "computer" B - open hard drive C - used HCL acid ( about 1 quart ) D - pour all over the harddrive wait about 1 hour - that will fix almost any issues you have but just in case - if you are in a multi-story building with windows that open - open the window and throw the whole mess out into the street - that will really fix the problem. This is a new project which I'm hoping IBM will get behind in a big way - I call it OEEB open ended eternal backup I hope this will be bigger than RAID

  • does anyone really know what time it is ?????
    M marc bellario

does anyone really care ??????????? Actually, where ever I park my car they know what time it is ......... It's like like the parking patrol has their brains linked to an atomic clock. I mean it's an incredible infra structure ... Meanwhile, for some stupid reason I can't update my setting to really tell it like it is - but that's okay - I'm going to give up on that ----- But since I really don't know "what it is" I guess it really doesn't matter ..... I'm just crabby ----- call me sponge bobed. :(( Maybe it would be all so much better if I had watched Barney this A.M. So I'm just nostalgic about my XT with 10 meg of hard disk - gee I thought that was a good machine - then I upgraded to a ps2 and you know it's been down hill ever since then ??????? :sigh: LI4DSF
