Windows Update...I can tell you something about the download. That is done via BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) in the background using about 30% of your available network bandwidth. Shutting down your computer while downloading is no problem, BITS resumes the download of the appropriate file the next time you are online again. More information can be found on MSDN. Free version of Opera 8, sans adsI emailed them, too. But I didn't get a reply either. Can it be, that we mailed too early? Cause it says on the download page: Download.com This offer is valid from 12 a.m. Tuesday, August 30 to 12 a.m. Wednesday, August 31 2005 (PDT). A google for PDT showed that PDT=UTC-7hrs UTC is now 13:23, i.e. PDT is now 6:23 a.m. Am I correct?

Nokia mobile questionYou should be able to copy all your numbers from the phone memory to the sim card. I.e. in my old Nokia phone, there was an option named "copy all numbers to sim/memory". Then you should have no trouble in migrating them to the new mobile phone. Second possibility is that you buy/lend a datacable and install nokia PC-Suite onto your pc. With that software it is very easy to migrate/backup/restore data on all nokia mobiles. Regards

There's something SO wrong.......Some things make me sad, some of them even ANGRY! If we fail teaching our children - who else shall do it? The teachers that often lack authority? Social workers? It is a difficult topic and we are aware that sometimes public institutions have to try to correct what some of us did wrong. But this way?

Goodbyes are painful, aren't they? :(Unfortunately, friends leave. Fortunately, life goes on - and sometimes your roads cross each others again. If he is worth it - as I read your posting, he definitely is - try to keep contact with each other. Regards Mathias

EU Software Patent Law Said in DangerI think it's kind of annoying that such an important topic get's this kind of feedback! I don't like gangsta style spelling, but I don't hate it either. Also we had this conversation about gangsta style some days ago, now calm down and head on to the more important things. Regards Mathias

EU Software Patent Law Said in DangerI can only hope that our european deputies think about the consequences of their decision. Personally I hope that the bill about software patents will be rejected, because I too, fear that small businesses will lose ground towards greater software firms. Also I think that a law like this will provoke and complicate patent lawsuits. I think it would do more damage than it would help protect innovations. Regards Mathias P.S.: I am from Germany.

Advice on code versionsWith my limited knowledge and experience, I would suggest going for solution ... The main difficulty I see, is that if you update the binaries the moment you check in the code, you and the other developers can see directly if there are bugs that affect others. The other way round it is likely to happen that you develop on unstable code/binaries. Waiting for your QC gives you all a stable platform but slows down the development process as a hole but it assures that the project always goes into the "right" direction. Vikram A Punathambekar wrote: * Since the project is fairly big and quite a few changes have to be made on different parts of the code, one developer might not know what changes the others are making. Knowing that, I think it is a hard decision. I would decide to wait for QC. [Edit]I hope that my answer isn't complete rubbish and I could help you a little. Regards Mahtias [Edit]

Multimedia OSHello everybody, I am thinking about making my old pc an entertainment machine for my living room. I searched the web for mini linux distributions that can play dvds, audio-cds, play tv & record from tv (this is the most important feature for me). Can anybody let me know about his/her experiences with e.g. mulimidix, geexbox, freevo or distributions like these? Regards Mathias
