  • Develop for UWP?
    M MiddleTommy

I really like UWP as a platform. The major thing I dont like is the control venders seem to think if you want UWP you want big finger clickable controls. I wish you could easily adjust the control sizes for mouse and keybord to give a more WPF control sizing and have an easy toggle to let users switch to touch screen mode. The other thing I dont like is if you are accessing a database like documentDB you cant do it directly from UWP easily. This makes prototyping a pain as you have to setup a prototype web api and a prototype UWP app. I guess with other mobile development it is the same.

  • Using IEnumerable nonsense for everything
    M MiddleTommy

I would argue the total opposite. This is not cancer. The data does not get copied and iterated because this is all lazy processed. Perhaps you dont understand how these methods actually work. Do you know how many times it took me hours to construct a proper nested for loop? With this style the complex can be accomplished in minutes. You need to call ToList when you are complete to finally iterate over the entire IEnumerable. Because the Where and Select methods are lazy processed I have found that you dont get the proper results at the end unless you call ToList. Also calling ToList is needed when performing async or multi threaded code. You need your own copy of the items to mess with otherwise you will get errors. As for performance we are talking small milliseconds longer. I can read and understand that one liner perfectly in 5 seconds. Can you honestly say that a for loop is perfectly understandable in that amount of time? I think not. Also did you know you can iterate over thousands of records in the same amount of time it takes to do an if(x == y) statement. "if" comparisons are the slowest code to run.

I like distributed Windows Updates so all my computers get updates faster sharing from my LAN That's a few reasons I upgraded to Win10 I don't like One Drive as much in Win10 but that is the only thing not better.

  • Windows Phone Sales Make Me Sad
    M MiddleTommy

First you have to practically beg a sales person to sell you a windows phone so the causal public will never be prompted windows phone is an option. Second we are in a drought of new/any windows phones. I have gone to Best Buy and the AT&T store to look at windows phones many times and they don't even have them on display. You have to buy them directly from Microsoft or online from say Amazon. I think most people who buy new things online go the store to look at options then buy online. If you don't have the options in physical stores you are cutting your potential buyers. So mostly people who buy windows phones are those who know what they are and where to get one. Also they are ok with buying unlocked upfront. I know 4 other windows phone users in my extended family.

  • Windows: Say goodbye to the Desktop
    M MiddleTommy

What is the desktop used for? A picture and a lot of clickable icons to launch programs. Most computers I see are cluttered with Icons on the Desktop. I like win 8 because it takes the most used feature (IMO) of windows --- Launching an app by clicking on the desktop. Now there is a managed way to have that feature, the "Start Screen". The start menu was for power users. The start screen is for newbie and power user. Metro apps will get better once everyone stops complaining and actually let Microsoft know what will make "Metro" better. Dear Microsoft, Please make metro better by (sorry I refer to is as metro but it the only way I know you know what I am talking about) 1) Since file access is limited to developers give metro a full featured file explorer/picker/saver/opener similar to the desktop version with a panel on the left with favorites, network, etc... and different views List, Detail, Thumbnail..... 2) Letting multiple apps snap side by side is good. Next Make them Snap side by side and top to bottom for a fully customizable screen experience. 3)To ease everyone's gripping please let power users have floating metro windows in metro mode. I know its not the direction you wanted for metro but make it a hidden option so power users will stop their griping. If you only make it an option for certain screen sizes or multiple monitors that will cut down on the potential people getting confused about this feature.

  • Windows: Say goodbye to the Desktop
    M MiddleTommy

I think you miss the point of windows 8; If you dont like parts of it dont use them. I find the desktop in windows 8 to be superior to win 7; The Sales Person at Best Buy complained to me that there is a Desktop on this tablet with tiny buttons (trying to talk me out of buying a win8 tablet). Power users complaint that there are full screen apps on the computer that they dont like. Again, if you dont like parts of it dont use them. To start and app is the same as in win7 just looks different. Start->Type->(Arrow)->Enter For a non full metro ui experience in Win8.1 try Start+S->Type->(arrow)->enter As software developers we stress the importance of releasing a minimum viable product then rapidly releasing updates based on user wants and feedback. Is Microsoft not doing this? Keep giving them feedback and letting your wants known. Saying this has no value is a waste. You should be saying this could be better if...

  • Windows 8.1 - first (and second) impressions anyone?
    M MiddleTommy

I honestly dont see why people dont like the start screen. Are people that stubborn? It has 100% the functionality of the start menu. Do you not realize you can still click start type a few characters of what you want then click on the app you want from the filtered list? Or do these people suffer from 2yr old problems that when things disappear on screen you think they are gone forever? Or do you have to keep your eyes on your twitter stream why you are opening a new program? My biggest complaint about the start menu in Win7 is it was too small to find something when you didnt know the name. I much prefer the start screen to the old start menu. Most people I know only click on programs on the desktop. If it's not on the desktop I will get support calls asking where an app is. The start screen gives most people what they have always wanted big icons informative on the "Metro Desktop" to click on to start programs. Perhaps all that is needed to appease the start screen hatred is a more customized way to change icons colors or add rounded corners. But now that IOS7 is much more vibrant perhaps more acceptance of the start screen will be seen. The only thing I hate about Win8 - 8.1 is the Metro File Pickers/Browsers. I felt that Win7+ finally got a good open save dialog on the desktop(it looks just like explorer with your favorites etc..) Now in Metro we are back to Win3.1 file picker. They could easily create the new one in Metro and should (I hope). My hope for Window 9 is they will have Metro floating windows/dialogs.

I do hope there will be multi app for multi monitor support. And a split screen option would be nice too. Like I said before I work with many apps tabs and monitors too. I am just like that too. But I am beginning to look at that way I interact with my computer as having too many SQL Joins (slow). I think Metro is more of a NOSQL brain approach to desktop computing. All that monitoring is taking our attention away from the current task.

Ah, but you do work on just a single app at a time. WP7 mango lets you see all the running apps. I am sure an "Alt-Tab" like shortcut will emerge for win8. Metro forces the App developers to allow the OS to close/hibernate Apps not in use to keep the system running smooth. You should be able to re open an app you were on previously and the app starts up where you left off. So why have them open all the time?

I think it is brilliant for a desktop pc. I have many employees that are the "if it is not on the desktop it doesnt exist" type. This will ease my job in supporting them. Simplification is what most users want. Power users like us are kicking and screeming. But we will get used to it because we know how to learn computers.

Any job no matter how exciting will eventually become repetitive. And lets face it, it will be work (as in you will have to put for effort an stress your potential). I often think of an amazing job that I would want to do but then realize that it would take just as much work if not more that what I am currently doing. So what ever you choose it will be work that will become repetitive and boring at some point.

  • Why is .NET so popular? (Serious Question)
    M MiddleTommy

Visual Studio, WPF GUI (or 3rd party win forms Gui), C# is easy to learn yet powerful. You don't need your code to be the Fastest. It just needs to be fast enough. When I look for (Free) help on open source languages the documentation is not there, the help is either too general or too complex. I find the mindset of the open source world to be "if your not at a 401 experience level then come back when you are" Microsoft has alot of 101, 201, 301 college level material available free. Open source seems to have 101 & 401 levels available. I find it too time consuming to make the jump with out paying someone. Also I discover Frameworks with intellisense. Open Source says real programmers don't need intellisense (text editor and command line is the way to go). Yes I am stereotyping. Honestly I would love to up my experience level of Java, Ruby, Python etc... from 101 to 401 but my kids would then hate me because they would never see me.

    M MiddleTommy

I think WP7 will make it. For one the apps are what it is all about. The OS is minor. The .NET army of programmers will make WP7 succeed. It is a very low learning curve. And you have Microsoft behind it. They have the $$ to make it happen. This is just the first torpedo fired at Android and iPhone. I am not a Microsoft fan boy but I think they are taking major step in the right direction.

  • What phones run on Windows phone 7?
    M MiddleTommy

Does it really matter how many phones use it? The IPhone is only one phone (and one carrier). All that matters is how good the phone is. I think windows 7 phone has much more potential than the IPhone. Look at the .Net developers and support they have. Hopefully Microsoft will make the correct choices to allow the phones a solid platform for apps. As long as you dont have to reboot your phone and hold it upside down at a 37 degree angle to get an app working Ill be happy
