Fist MagnetsOf course, I suppose I can't entirely dismiss the possibility that I am, in fact, an idiot... ;) ;) Dave R

Fist MagnetsMust have been from marketing, right? Or HR.... I've known too many like that in my day - that's why I prefer to work alone now. I know I'm no expert, but I can't help but get irritated when people who are obviously idiots take me to task for not having a CS degree. Dave R

Thoughts on IE6I can't claim credit for this - I spotted it in the microsoft.public.vi.dtc newsgroup the other day. The original post was by one David Loder. Here's his post - If you have any applications written with Visual InterDev 6 that use the _ScriptLibrary functions to render objects, be warned that IE6 will not be identified as being DHTML capable. And anyone using IE6 will see your application as if they were using a non-DHTML browser such as IE3. The problem lies in the pm.asp page located in the _ScriptLibrary directory. In that page, there is a function called _SOM_isDHTMLBrowser(), that attempts to determine if your browser is DHTML capable. This function only checks to see if you are running IE4 or IE5 and returns true if you are. If you are running IE6, it returns false, and all objects are rendered as down-level (non-DHTML) html objects. The original lines in pm.asp were - function _SOM_isDHTMLBrowser() { if (typeof(this._isDHTMLBrowser) == 'undefined') { this._isDHTMLBrowser = false; var userAgent = String(Request.ServerVariables ('HTTP_USER_AGENT')); if (userAgent.indexOf('MSIE 4.') != -1 || userAgent.indexOf('MSIE 5.') != -1) this._isDHTMLBrowser = true; } return this._isDHTMLBrowser; } Throw in an extra 'OR' clause... function _SOM_isDHTMLBrowser() { if (typeof(this._isDHTMLBrowser) == 'undefined') { this._isDHTMLBrowser = false; var userAgent = String(Request.ServerVariables('HTTP_USER_AGENT')); if ((userAgent.indexOf('MSIE 4.') != -1) || (userAgent.indexOf('MSIE 5.') != -1)|| (userAgent.indexOf('MSIE 6.') != -1)) this._isDHTMLBrowser = true; } return this._isDHTMLBrowser; } Dave R

Allright, who's a math whiz?f'' = ((lne)*((0.5*((((1/x)*(sin((arccosx)/(x^2))))-((lnx)*(((((-1/(sqrt(1-(x^2))))*(x^2))-((arccosx)*(2*x)))/(x^4))*(cos((arccosx)/(x^2))))))/((sin((arccosx)/(x^2)))^2)))*(((lnx)/(sin((arccosx)/(x^2))))^-0.5)))*(e^(((lnx)/(sin((arccosx)/(x^2))))^0.5)) it needs a bit of simplification yet. Allright, who's a math whiz?I have a little calculus project I've been working on for a while, and I'm nearly ready to release it. (It's a free web app - no charge.) I'd like to have a few people play with it for a bit first, and see if I've committed any major errors. I'm trying to keep it low profile for the time being - I don't even want to publicly give the URL here. (I'm not trying to blow my horn - I just want a couple of Beta testers.) If you're interested, respond here and I'll email you the URL. Dave R

They may have made a profit, too!Can you hold a short position for a few weeks as an individual? Apparently - I'm no financier, but according to the story it may have been set up years in advance (if it did in fact happen). It would fit - and how ironic, to use the very institutions they planned to attack. Adding insult to injury, that. Dave R

They may have made a profit, too!You won't believe this... According to a story in the BBC (click here), it is suspected that associates of bin Laden sold short on stocks of airlines, aramaments industries and reinsurance companies in the weeks leading up to the attacks on NY and DC. Germany, Japan, the UK and the American SEC are all investigating stock transactions in their countries. Dave R

define 'terrorism'To some extent I think I agree with Fazlul on this. One man's terrorist is quite likely another man's freedom fighter. Both the definitions you give for 'terrorist' could also apply (IMHO) to the term 'total war'. The trend towards involving civilian populations in war in modern times started in the First World War, when Germans used zeppelins to bomb civilian populations in England. Be careful that your interpretation of recent events is not slanted by personal political prejudices or government spin. It is best to try to think of things in an historical perspective, and make your own judgements. Dave R

Good wordsYeah, he has decent speech-writers. Take away his script and he's not quite as eloquent (or diplomatic). Am I the only one who was horrified by his depiction of the coming military campaign as a 'crusade'? Seems to me that if you're trying to gain the cooperation of Islamic countries, that was an unfortunate turn of phrase.:| :| Dave R

CarefullyPersonally, I see great danger in the future. I believe this has the potential to spread into a global conflict with time. The forces of radical Muslim fundamentalists are widespread and intensely devoted. Israel, it seems to me, is taking advantage of the diversion of the world's attention to intensify the war against the Palestinian Authority. Sharon was quick to jump on the bandwagon and cast himself and his government in the role of comrade in arms against the evil of terrorism. (This is not to denigrate the injuries suffered by Israeli civilians in terror attacks there.)I feel that the US must balance a violent reprisal against the Taliban and the Bin Laden cells with a forceful directive to the Israelis that their pursuit of illegal settlements (condemned repeatedly by the UN) is a great force for destabilization, and if they want us to continue to ensure their survival they must stop stirring the root of the conflict - get the hell off the Dome of the Rock and out of East Jerusalem. At the same time, I agree with your analysis, Christian, about the prescence of American troops in Saudi Arabia. We also can be a great force for instability. This country has propped up a dictatorship clearly acting against the interests of their own people, and in light of the track record in that respect (Central America, the Phillipines, Iran, etc, etc, etc) we never seem to be able to rise above our own greedy interests. And now we are faced with an undeniable need to act. I agree with the majority that we must respond in a devastating manner, but I see no good coming from it in the long run. A bus with Muslim kids is stoned in Australia, mobs in Chicago menace a mosque. AP carried a quote from one pinhead in the mob - ' I'm proud to be an American, and I've always hated Arabs.' The root of the problem is unchanged in the Middle East, no matter what we do in Afghanistan. Dave R

The Lounge is now moderated.I think the site will be better for it in the long run. It seems to have become dominated by people who use it as a platform for intolerance and hate - even insignificant subjects like OS's and language preference are used as the basis for abusive rants. And this from people who consider themselves well-educated and enlightened. Dave R

Poisonous creepy-crawlers....I'll see your brown recluse and raise you one White tailed spider.  ;P White-tailed spiders are not aggressive, and tend to bite if they are provoked or startled. The spider often bites more than once almost as if it is "tasting" potential prey. Oh, splendid.... Dave R
-
Poisonous creepy-crawlers....Yes, THAT is a spider. (Sounds like a Foster's ad.) Actually, the Brown Recluse is worse, but less common than, the Black Widow. They have a nasty venom that necrotizes flesh. Check this out. Dave R

Poisonous creepy-crawlers....In the Sierra Nevada in California. Contrary to popular belief, not all of Ca. has been paved over like L.A. and Silly-cone Valley. There are still places where critters that go on more (or less) than two legs are prevalent. Actually, the scorpions aren't too bad - there are much more poisonous varieties in New Mexico, Arizona and points south. More sinister are the other arachnids - Black Widows and Brown Recluses. We've killed a few Widows on the outside of the house. Haven't seen any indoors - of course, that doesn't mean they aren't there. They seem to have a thorough understanding of the fact that being seen by a human means instant death. It's not all like that, though. We keep a couple of bird feeders out, plus a couple watering dishes and we scatter seed on the ground at the end of the driveway, where I can see it all from the office window. There are wild turkey, quail, deer, foxes, rabbits, skunks, all manner of little birds. We keep a couple of hummingbird feeders going, and a bunch of hummers live in the trees out front. We have to bring the feeders in at night because a bear has learned to take them down and empty them out. (Bastard is getting good - he hardly makes a sound, and has figured out how to get one feeder of the bail it hangs by and carry it off down the hill. One disappeared entirely - I figure it's hanging outside his den.) For a couple of years there was a female who would bring her cubs up at night. Totally cool. Dave R

Poisonous creepy-crawlers....Jeez, I hate it when this happens.... Just stepped out of the shower, walked into my office to find my kitty-cat proudly sitting over the body of a big friggin' scorpion under my chair!!   Dave R
