Actually surprised the media could even produce such junk:) What I find interesting is the guys inability to recognise IT as just a step forward in technology and culture. OK, advertising is more focused, more directed, but it always has been directed and focused. The change is in scale, not type. Of course if he is just being an 'anti' then that is also interesting. Why? Why does he feel the desire to 'put the brakes on' regarding technology, what is he scared of?
-
Actually surprised the media could even produce such junkOf course, but the question is does his opinion reflect a trend in certain sectors of society. Is there a growing anti technology sentiment or not.

Actually surprised the media could even produce such junkThis post is about IT, so I think entirely suitable in the lounge.

Actually surprised the media could even produce such junkJust came across this laughable garbage: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/sep/17/tech-climate-change-luddites-data "Big tech claims AI and digitization will bring a better future. But putting computers everywhere is bad for people and the planet" "Our built environment is becoming one big computer. “Smartness” is coming to saturate our stores, workplaces, homes, cities. As we go about our daily lives, data is made, stored, analyzed and used to make algorithmic inferences about us that in turn structure our experience of the world. " So your fridge, should you have one that does this, knows you are consuming a lot of pork say, and directs you to a variety of pork suppliers. Is this 'structuring your experience of the world'? Or is it so mundane it no more structures it than an advert for Pepsi on a bill board? He then goes on to make some even more ridiculous claims about IT: "A growing chorus of activists, journalists and scholars are calling attention to the dangers of digital enclosure. Employers are using algorithmic tools to surveil and control workers. Cops are using algorithmic tools to surveil and control communities of color." Is there a growing backlash in certain parts of society against IT, or is this a desperate journalist looking for a story where there isnt one?

Programming bidding websiteGraus tried one of these sites, and got ripped off. As amusing as that might be to most of us, probably best avoided I think.

:) C# is Microsofts version of Java. Remember when they got fined by the courts for messing around with Java? Well they came up with .Net (an interpreter) and C# in revenge. (Ever wondered why J++ byte code can run direct on .Net?) And then pretty much took over, Java is now almost dead except for a few specific applications. J2EE comes to mind.

Sous Vide everythingIt is just a fancy trend that is a bit pointless though isnt it. Like Balsamic dressing. Roast vine tomatoes. It will go the way of flared jeans and platform shoes.

if you hate writing and trying to test multithreaded code raise your handOuch, that is going to be a mess. It isnt that threads are difficult, it is that they are a fundamental part of the architecture, and need to go in first, not at the end, as a bodge. Probably better to redesign the whole thing.

Ubuntu Wins (defeats Win10)!I use GEdit on Unix to edit code, it even colours the code in for you like the VS editor does. And then you tyoe make in a command window. You can set up a browse with ctags and codequery on Linux, you can even include the kernel/other people source. Makes bug very easy to pin down. The main thing with Linux is that 'it just works'. From the OS you develop on, to the code you write (in my case Kernel), it just works. None of that jumping through hoops, that appalling circular MSFT documentation. The only thing I like about writing Windows kernel code is the truly incredible Windbg. If you want a debugger (even for user space code) it is incredible! (I often us VS to edit kernel code too, then build it with a command line. OK, I know the later VS can build too, but I still use the old WDK)

Owner of a new Prius!Damn awful! Electric cars are a joke. If you want a renewal fuel that is almost a direct replacement for petrol it is alcohol. GM plankton that produce high levels of sugar, yeast, and a still. We could produce trillions of liters of in in big factories in Spain, built on useless dry ground, soaking up massive amounts of sunlight.

Owner of a new Prius!Nah, very naff more like. The favourite car of virtue signalising celebs, who in their spare time take first class flights around the world. Teslas are pretty cool, they actually go like stink, of course pretty pointless if your commute is slow, but cool, now that would have to be a: https://www.classic-british-motorcycles.com/images/Rat3-brn-L3.jpg[^]
