  • Data Entry battle scars (a follow up to Richard's Big Coding Challenge post)
    M Mycroft Holmes

I remember a contract where I was not allowed to talk to the end user and there was no such thing as a BA. All information came through a manager. Needless to say it was a total disaster and is the only time I ended up in court over a design :sigh:

  • Learning C# or really .net, confirm for me my suspicions
    M Mycroft Holmes

You are correct the C# component of .net is a minor part of the ecosystem and not something I would concentrate on YET. Assuming there is a database component you will need to understand that. EntityFramework is one option (and a large one) or normal connections. You need to decide on a UI, winforms, WPF or web. Choose the web and you open an entire bucket of worms and other nasties. WPF has a steep learning curve and winforms is somewhat dated. You can then use your exploring these components to get your head around C# - the bits you need. Now that is going to keep you entertained for some time. Although your experience will shorten the learning curve dramatically.

  • I need a new life...
    M Mycroft Holmes

Retired from Singapore and moved to Cairns, we knew no one except our son (who we do NOT socialise with). We got a couple of dogs and made a few friends with people walking the beach, joined a bridge club and picked up a few more friends. We have a thing called "Men's Sheds" here but I have not been involved in them as I have more people I call friends (4-5) than I can deal with. I had my wife as my only friend for the previous 20 years.

I read this and tears come to my eyes, retirement should be a relaxing, pleasant slide into a peaceful ending, preferable 20-30 years from now. It is probably still better than being alone (probably).

  • How to structure a Blazor web site
    M Mycroft Holmes

I have what I thought was a fairly simple requirement, web site (blazor) that delivers a minimal membership service. No registration (this is done by a WPF app with 1-2 users). Set up a web api to service the data and authentication requirements (done using JWT tokens) And this is where the rabbit hole opens up! Create a web app that gets its authentication from the web api and then service the data requirements. Every example i have found wants to use Entity this and Entity that with 7 different tables, registration, 2 factor security and password recovery, NONE of which I need. All I need is to get an authenticated (email and password) token from the API and include that in each subsequent request header. This already works perfectly for the WPF client but I cannot understand how it should be done for a blazor site. Any suggestions or examples would be appreciated.

I think that is about to change, I have never heard of a successful or even adequate conversion utility. This used to be my bread and butter, a total rewrite is going to be your best option. And for Ghu's sake do not outsource the project, you need to domain knowledge to do this properly.

    M Mycroft Holmes

We are dog people with 2 black labs which I credit with keeping me alive - the daily demand for walks along the beach do that. One of them recently saw a cat for the first time (at a boarding kennel) and freaked out, he had no idea what to do with it, the other could care less and totally ignored it. Dogs become part of the family, cats deign to live with you!

    M Mycroft Holmes

Attempting to recover from the Azure disaster I downloaded the developer and then the express versions of SQL Server 22. Both failed to install because of a missing/incorrect msoledbsql. I then downloaded the dll and installed it before attempting to reinstall, it still failed on the same issue. I tried the same with 2019 version with the same issue. Any suggestions as to how to get around the problem?

  • What a disaster
    M Mycroft Holmes

So I want to do a pro bono job for a small bridge club, I set up what I thought was a free Azure account, a whole bunch of free services including sql server, great I thought just what I am looking for. Check the usage after a few days development and all looks good 3% used. The I get a bill for $700 the next month, do you think there is any way to dispute the bill, nope, just a chatbot and we all know how helpful they are. I obviously did something wrong with the subscription but there seems to be no way to find out what caused the bill. I wonder if I can get the CC to cancel the charge?

  • Can a student that can't even handle freshman calculus possibly be a good programmer?
    M Mycroft Holmes

Lol - I left school at 15, did not even finish high school, I have no idea what calculus would do or be used for and yet I had a highly successful career writing business solutions. You could not take that path today but in the 80s/90s it was possible.

  • Why do companies do this to themselves?
    M Mycroft Holmes

Welcome to retirement, sit back relax and enjoy not having managers and user to pester you! I had exactly the opposite experience with my last (14 year) contract with a bank in Singapore. Senior person was an ex coder who was a workaholic and had prodigious knowledge of the industry. His protégé was a junior support tech when I started and ended up running the department. They were of the opinion that if you did not have 3 projects on the go you were under utilised. Both were brilliant to work for. Mind you some of the meetings would bore the tits off a cow, if there were more that 6 attendees I left as it would be a waste of time.
