That's a good question. I suspect that a tuner for digital broadcasts is completely different from the tuner box for digital cable. I'll be sure to ask that question when I call Comcast to cancel my cable service. QRZ? de WAØTTN

Well it looks hopeless. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, and to Sohail for the tip on looking at the Service tab in Process Explorer. But in the end, the system is becoming more and more unstable as I try to lobotomize it. X| So I'm making a final backup and will start the long and tedious process of rebuilding from the ground up. Pff, it's not like it matters much anyway — it's not the people's votes that count, it's the number of votes the doofuses get from the Electoral College. Which, when you think about it, is really rather dumb — shouldn't the Electoral Votes only be used to decide a tiebreaker or something from the results of the votes coming in from the precincts? What's the point in people voting in each state if, no matter which candidate gets the majority of the precinct votes, it's the person with the most electoral votes that gets elected? :confused:

This is my finally followup, and again I want to thank everyone who responded to my request for help. I haven't been able to meet up with the fellow who was having the problem yet, but in the meantime I realized I needed to have a "reference" Vista system around for just this type of issue, so I bought a fairly cheap Vista mini-tower at Office Depot last weekend. I finally had time today to test the project build out on the new machine today and guess what? It works just fine! So clearly the primary problem was that I was assuming it was a Vista related problem. It seems likely, at this point, that the fellow has a corrupted tee.exe file. We're meeting next week and should be able to get to the bottom of this. I'll report back, if anyone is interested in the final results. Thanks again for all your help. Doh! I forgot to check the partitions. I was just formatted the thing from a command line, so I didn't see that there was a whole extra partition on the drive. I guess when I first partitioned the thing, years ago, I only set up an 80Gb partition, maybe reserving the other 40Gb for another O/S installation. I repartitioned and it's formatting now. Man, it's always the most fundamental stuff that bites you :doh: QRZ? de WAØTTN

Little off the subject - I am looking for a easy way to convince windows that USB drive is a dynamic drive. In past I plugged the drive intenally and mark it dynamic than moved it onto USB hardware. But since my current external drive is "sealed" I cannot do that without voiding the warranty. Anyway, even when the USB drive is dynamic windows will regenerate it every time you turn the power on - no good. Looking for a real dynamic USB hard drive "fdisk" program. Vaclav (AA7EJ)

I haven't done any research (most of my LPs have been turned into flower-pots) but the original post talked about soundcard-ready turntables, which I guess implies built-in pre-amp.
