I just used the line counting addin to find the number of lines in the project I am working on now. It has 20 VC++ projects and the counted lines of code is 228,000. I am working on this for the past 9 months. The count also includes the VC++ auto-generated code :).

Furthermore I would suggest that if someone writes code where setting breakpoints in default constructors/destructors is essential to debug the code, then you have far more serious problems than code layout. Indeed. Code layout is part of a larger job of thinking about minimising the cost of code maintenance. If adding a destructor or default constructor to a class definition is going to cause a large rebuild (lets say most of the files in most of the 50+ DLLs of 2 million lines of code - and yes I am working on code where a few files are sadly this important - (*)), then having that constructor/destructor always defined (even if #ifdef _DEBUG conditionally compiled) is a major bonus as I don't have to wait a few hours whilst it builds. I guess I got slightly off topic, but it is these trivial things that do matter. Default constructors/destructors that are supplied by the compiler are identical to empty constructors/destructors, so if I found them in someones code I'd assume they are there for a reason, not because of a mistake. I guess we have different attitudes to /expectations of the rest of the team we work with. Besides a decent comment with each would put your mind at rest in any case. (*) One part of my gig with these people is to track down resource and performance problems that the rest of the team are too busy to look at. As a result I'm often dumped into code I've never seen before. In those cases constructors and destructors and lifetimes of said objects are often a great help in determining at what point something didn't go as planned. I would like to see CodeProject welcome commercial and shareware material so long as it is useful to the CP community. After all, what we have in common is that we use commercial tools (VC++, MFC) to program for a commercial closed-source OS, so it's a bit precious to demand that we only consider free open-source tools to use with our commercial compilers and to run on our commercial OS. The bottom line should be, how useful will the material be to people on CP? My greatest concern would be that I search for solutions to a problem I face and the hits are dominated not by articles that help me understand the problem or that give examples of how to solve it, but with ads that don't help me. I would like to see commercial stuff segregated to a specific part of CodeProject and for a checkbox for searches that would let the user decide whether he wants to search in the commercial area or not. Having just posted something on the quality of commercial libraries, and having participated in the lively discussion of "Software Protector" last month, I would welcome an area that would let CP members honestly discuss the merits and defects of commercial software libraries. Having an area for commercial products on CP would provide an uncensored forum for discussing these products that we could not find on a vendor's website or a banner ad. If this provided valuable feedback to library vendors, then we'd all win. Given that it costs money to run CodeProject, it might be worth considering whether companies should pay a fee to post articles plugging their commercial products (i.e., have a space for paid infomercials and advertorials). There are drawbacks to this, because it would undermine the editorial neutrality of CP and create a conflict of interest regarding how CP treats negative comments about paying customers.

Erik Well you know how the marketing types are. But seriously, it seems like a whack of code for $699, but I haven't bought one yet, although I might. I like the idea of having all that stuff there if I need it, although I don't imagine I'll be using the Math stuff all that much. Lori
