  • Will you send your name to the SUN? Parker Solar Probe
    P piyush_singh

NASA is inviting us to submit our names which they will then, send it to the SUN's surface! This is a part of Parker Solar Probe [^]. The objective of this mission is to study SUN's atmosphere. Our names won't serve any purpose to the mission! However, I think it will show our support and interest towards these endeavors. Hence I submitted mine. Have you also submitted your name or planning to so? [^]

if you want to get into freelancing, it's the people you know that can help you find a project

Completely true in my case as well. One of my previous org work on small to medium projects. Since I parted with them on a good term, they came back to me asking if I'll be interested in freelancing. And, that's how I got started. It's really hard to convince a stranger especially now, when there already are too many players. I know couple of orgz who do full time bidding on these freelance sites. They have bunch of devs at there disposal. There ratings are high. It's really hard to compete with them as an individual. So, back to you what you just said that, people you know are indeed the real deal.

  • Do you want some cheese with that whine?
    P piyush_singh

Absolutely! I have been using Windows 10 and have no reason to revert back to Win7. Win10 together with Office365 offers some really unique features. I, for one, absolutely love it's Quick Access feature which shows recently modified files both locally and from OneDrive, sorted by last modified date. Now they will be packing this feature up to SharePoint sites as well. The OS is now complementing their products both locally and on the cloud. Which is a great feature. Users can now access files from local machine, OneDrive, and SharePoint sites from the explorer itself. :) As a developer, VS will always remain my best product. Product might be a vague term. It can be a software. It can be a website. It can be a OS. For me, no matter what the category is, VS will remain the pick of all. That is one seamless stuff from MS! :)

  • So I think Edge might finally be a good browser.
    P piyush_singh

The new Opera is actually built on chromium so the effect is like Chrome however, the performance is fast. Plus, it also offers free vpn service in its developer edition, if you're interested. :)

  • So I think Edge might finally be a good browser.
    P piyush_singh

Chrome is still my go to browser for web development. However, there's no denying that it is very resource hungry. It's smooth, it's nice, it's elegant but after couple of different windows with multiple tabs, it tends to slow down my computer! :( Which is why, I only use it for development only. My go to browser for all the other cases is the new Opera dev (with vpn) or FireFox dev. I use edge occasionally for office use only. Haven't yet tried the Creator's Update. Looking forward to it after your comment. :)

Getting time to ditch chrome for edge as secondary browser, the edge is actually improving while chrome is for all it's updates is still stuck where it was 5 years ago

That's true. Even I have started using Edge as my secondary browser, ff being default. Edge has its issues but it's definitely improving while Chrome just seems too slow. One thing though, I still prefer Chrome developer tool over ff for web development and Edge, I strictly use for browsing only. :)

  • Microsoft: I don't want Edge. Really.
    P piyush_singh

I use both, Chrome and FireFox for development and testing. I do need at least one browser where no development is going on and which is why I use Edge. I know, that I can always find my emails, drives, and other company related stuffs over there while chrome and firefox usually remain over-tabified! :-D Definitely, I am not gonna use it for development, but as a user, I have not found any such issues with it.

  • DropDown Sign-In option is not working on Chrome
    P piyush_singh

The drop-down sign-In option on the homepage is not working on my latest chrome version. When I hover the mouse on the sign-In option, the drop-down panel becomes visible, but none of the text-boxes are taking any user input. For signing in, you have to navigate to the sign-In page first. My current chrome version is 45.0.2454.85 m. Apart from Chrome, I have checked this in IE 11 and FireFox 42.0a2 (2015-09-07)(Dev) and the functionality is working perfectly fine in these browsers.

    Do you use source control

This one's a must. When I joined a reputed firm some times back I took source control for granted. But after I joined, they informed me that the client on whose project I'll be working was not paying for the source control hence there's no code backing mechanism (forget the versioning)!! So then how did they take backups? They usually put there codes on other peoples machine even if they had nothing to do with its development! In that way if tomorrow my machine crashed, I could take the code from any of the other person. (There was no dearth of options ) The end result: There were source codes everywhere. We even put them on the machine of the QA guys. We stored the zip files in the QA server of the client (as the devs didn't had access to the prod servers :) ). If anybody feels like avoiding this sort of situation, please ensure they have source control for your project.

  • Looking for a new browser...
    P piyush_singh

Opera consumes lots of memory compared to firefox when you're working with many tabs. That's the one issue I have with them. Apart from that it's like any other browser. It's app store isn't as big as that of Chrome or FireFox. What I most liked about Opera was it bit torrent, which helped to pause/resume a download, which works even for a network drop. I think Chrome also offer this nowadays. Anyways, its not bad, I am using it on both my work environments, Win7 & Ubuntu 12.04 and its nice...

My primary browser is FF. I think it's compatible with most of the sites (don't know if there's any site that it doesn't support) and is also quite swift. Another browser that I sometime use is Opera. Rest of them, I only use to test my web application's performance.
