This sounds like a reasonable thing to do with an assembly hosted by SqlServer 2005, but I'm not sure if it's really necessary to jump through extra hoops just for simple logging. Could you not, for example, create a table which stores the log messages (instead of writing them to a file)? That would probably be more performant than calling into an assembly, plus, you could query that table in various ways - something not possible with pure text. Just a thought... Josh

Okay, I actually want the max size of the column and I think that information is missing in the XML. The XML looks something like this. Max size of the column is used by the XSL to print the data. For datatypes like int, numeric, datetime I can manage the column lenght, problem arises only when its of type string, char etc It has the column name, type, minOccurs. Ask for the schema: SELECT TABLE_CATALOG FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES GROUP BY TABLE_CATALOG Look up INFORMATION_SCHEMA in BOL if you need to verify more than just the catalog (database) name.
