  • MFC? WinForms? I gotta ask... why?
    P PSU Steve

I am the lead for a WinForms app, still targeted for Framework 4.6.2, that is 90% VB.NET and 10% C#. Roughly 1.5 million LOC. This is an enterprise app supporting US Air Force electronic warfare. We started the app back in 2005 and it's still going strong and expanding today.

  • Been into board games lately
    P PSU Steve

Our family's favorite board game is probably Clue, because the kids have a fighting chance against me. :-) For Christmas, I got the missus "Abducktion". Abducktion | Board Game | BoardGameGeek[^] It was totally an impulse buy based on a Facebook ad, but it really is a lot of fun. We are a busy family and hopefully will be able to sneak in a game or two of this, where we usually can't find time for a longer board game.

  • Can someone be a good data scientist without knowing Calculus?
    P PSU Steve

Universities would have to change their curriculum based on HS kids not having calc. I went to a small Catholic grade school which didn't get around to algebra by 8th grade. When I went to HS, I was behind a year in math, which means I never got to calc in HS. As a comp sci major at Penn State, I had to take three semesters of physics, starting first sememster. Well, Physics 101 required some calc. Fortunately I had a few friends who taught me enough calc to get by with a decent grade. If universities still expect a calc background leaving HS, this would be a disaster. Fast forward to today where my son is already taking calc as a junior in HS...

  • Here's to the TMS-9900
    P PSU Steve

It's fun to revisit these advertisements from the good 'ol days. Speaking of old time advertisements, I remember the days of flipping through the hundreds of pages in "Computer Shopper", looking at all the cool stuff that was available. I remember back in 1991 as a new Lieutenant in the USAF, finally picking a "high end" PC and having to use two different credit cards to pay for it. The good 'ol days indeed... :-)

  • Flying the not so friendly skies
    P PSU Steve

Not quite the same, but a number of years ago I was couriering a classified hard drive with me on a TDY, heading to the west coast from Florida. I got to DFW and my flight was cancelled and it wasn't looking good to get on a flight out of DFW that day. I explained my situation to the airline folks and the massive hoops I would have to jump through to secure my classified package if I were stuck overnight. I don't recall the specifics, but do remember they bent over backwards to get me on a flight that day.

  • Any Lounge Lizards Actively Developing AI/ML Applications/Models/Systems?
    P PSU Steve

We've partnered with a government funded R&D software engineering center to work on an ML effort for missing data replacement. Our application (.NET Framework/WinForms) takes in a bunch of source reference data, some of which has gaps. The MDR model gets trained with the reference data that is complete. Our application then calls on the model, which utilizes a gradient descent algorithm, to fill in the missing values of records with gaps, giving a confidence level for each replacement value. It works pretty well.

  • Sick of 2FA
    P PSU Steve

We still use our personal devices, but have to run out to our car, storage locker, etc, where our phones are and write down the code, then bring it back into the secure location. It sucks.

  • Sick of 2FA
    P PSU Steve

Amen. I worked in a classified government vault so (A) we can't bring cell phones into our office and (B) personal email websites are usually unavailable. So getting 2FA codes is quite challenging...

  • We have a contender to exceed Microsoft's stupidity... and it is....
    P PSU Steve

I work for the US Air Force and we've had HP printers as long as I can remember (20+ years). It'll be interesting to see what the govt ends up doing because we have a LOT of printers that are on classified networks that obviously have no Internet access. It always amazes me when companies make decisions like this that they just have to know is going to alienate them from many of their customers. Baffling...

  • Do you like your keyboard for coding?
    P PSU Steve

I have been using an old style Microsoft Internet Keyboard (https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Internet-Keyboard-PS-Interface/dp/B00002MZ8G[^]) for years now. It's to the point where I've had to epoxy the legs back on when they broke. We're getting new KVMs pretty soon and I am worried the PS/2 to USB converter isn't going to work with the keyboard... :omg:

  • We're not all in the US: Annual rant about dates
    P PSU Steve

Julian dates all the way! 15-Jul-2022 = 2022-196 or 22196. Julian Date Converter - Longpela Expertise[^] I actually worked on an application back in the 90's where dates were tracked as Julian dates. Was a US Air Force transportation system and data records all had to fit in lines of 80 characters. Julian dates saved us one character. :)

    P PSU Steve

Me too - Win10 box with Storage Spaces. Around 3TB total with main folders for "official files" (an "office drive"), music, videos, software, sw dev projects. Been working just fine for years. The server gets backed up to an external drive daily. I do periodic ZIPs of the folders and copy them to DropBox for an offsite backup but I will probably look for a more automated solution soon.

  • The UI grind
    P PSU Steve

Been a full-stack developer for a WinForms app for 15+ years. I actually enjoy the UI part as much as the rest (code, DB design/development). I am very particular about my UI work and have established a number of standards that I consistently follow. I make sure the other devs (who are much, much newer to the project than me) follow the same standards. They are not overly happen about that... :)
