  • What was your first programming job like?
    R RickRoc

My first job involved making code changes to a Data General system that was undergoing an OS upgrade. All the code had to be changed just because the OS was changing! :omg: The job was supposed to be only temporary. The work I did and the initiative I showed to do beyond what was expected made me stay on permanently and eventually became IT Manager after only about 5 years. I have learned that going above and beyond what is expected is key to getting noticed and moving up in any profession.

Actually, modern research has proven that regular fasting is extremely healthy. It improves and magnifies all your senses. People can see better and have significant improvements in hearing, smell and taste and, believe it or not, much higher energy levels.

I ABSOLUTELY, COMPLETELY HATE IT!!!!! So often, Microsoft tries to make its software "smart" and ends up butchering it to death and making it more stupid than if they had just left it alone.

  • R.I.P. Windows XP SP2
    R RickRoc

Pain has a fond way of lingering for a very long time. When SP3 initially came out, I had calls from all over from clients that had automatic updates turned on and had a dead system. On some of those the only fix was to re-install SP2 from scratch. Those without backups were not happy campers!

  • I am XP SP2 addict!
    R RickRoc

OK, OK I admit it. I am still running XP SP2 as my main dev OS. I just haven't seen anything worthy yet of moving on to something else, especially when it involves money. Back when Microsoft initially released XP SP3, I had lots of clients with seriously crashed systems overnight. This was because they had automatic updates turned on and SP3 was automatically loaded at their next reboot. Needless to say, that left a bad taste in my mouth about moving to SP3. I'm sure the kinks have all been worked out by now but.... I like my XP SP2, even if it does have hundreds of patches. Other than lots of "oooh, ahhhh, shiny!" I don't see a justified increase in genuine productivity by moving to the new OSs... yet.

  • Programming ability over age [modified]
    R RickRoc

It's been scientifically proven that the more you stretch your brain the better you become at learning and the sharper your mind becomes regardless of age. Even if it's simple things, just as long it's not the same routine. Routine KILLS the brain. Always trying different things, keeping things new and fresh. Age is not a major factor in this.

  • Programming ability over age [modified]
    R RickRoc

The book of Genesis (The Bible) says that people used to live for hundreds of years. The oldest guy to ever live was over 900 years old (Methuselah was his name). God decided that this was not good because man became increasingly smart over time and could do just about anything he wanted. Because of this he decided to shorten our life cycle to only 100 years. Check it out, it's interesting reading!

1984 - The Nasdaq Stock Market. It was a fairly unknown company back then dealing only in penny stocks. The pay was actually just about right for the area. Most of the work was in Univac 1100 Assembler and some COBOL. Give me ambiguity or give me something else!

  • A discussion on life (Scientific, not philosophical)

Even if life is found somewhere else, why should that have any impact on religion? What difference does that make? The very definition of God implies that he created everything, including life elsewhere, if that's what he felt like doing. Give me ambiguity or give me something else!

Please call me ignorant, or what have you, but what is so bad about so-called "racial profiling"? What is the problem with checking those that look like Mexicans in a state that is on the Mexican border? Why is this such an evil thing to do? I'm not saying I agree with it but just curious. Give me ambiguity or give me something else!

  • What was the "Next Big Thing" when you started programming?
    R RickRoc

For me it was the awesome 16-bit Texas Instruments 99/4a. 16-bit was the NEW technology then. :omg: I saved up tons of money to get one and started creating video games that had to be saved on cassette tape! Later they came out with a large floppy disk drive that I drooled over but never got because it was just way too much money (about $400). That was two weeks pay back then.
