  • How many screens?
    R Rutvik Dave

I am using 2 (24" - 1920 x 1200) Screens. And it really makes the difference. I have tried using 3 screens, but that's too much. (Apart from the functional part - You often look stupid when trying to find windows on it :-D ) So IMHO 2 is the right setup. Anything less or more will affect the productivity. ... and 6 - he must be really using his revolving chair instead of alt+tab.

    R Rutvik Dave

So, you are saying they should not release/work on new versions? You know that upgrade / not to upgrade is in your hands, then why should the company stop developing new things? They have given you the option to stick with the old stuff if you want.

  • Bad UI/UX Design
    R Rutvik Dave

I just stumbled upon this page[^] (adobe developer forum). The fonts, spacing, margins, line height, color contrast, unnecessary huge fonts for dates days are few of the many things, which are completely wrong on the design side. I can't read anything there. Even when it's from the company that mostly builds tools for designers. What is funny that you won't miss URGENT! in the noisy layout... We are everywhere.

  • Using a Mac, [a bit over] a week later
    R Rutvik Dave

e.g... - Mac will not work properly on a network, - It doesn't work when I enable user quota and permission on my NAS, - It can't write to my friend's external HDD (because most of them are formatted with NTFS partitions, it can read but not write), - It can't read from my smartphone that is connected using USB (no usb mass storage mode), - sometimes it will not connect to my mobile hotspot (this happened many times on my client demo). - Can't connect projector. not even my PICO projector with USB port. - Many times it will not find the printer on a network. - Desktop window management sucks, you need to do some stupid gestures to find that Copy Files Progress window. - Crazy amount of terminal commands required to setup a development environment. - And the amount of internet bandwidth it consumes is insane. - Many apps will not have a proper installation process so when you drag it to your Application, it will ask you if you want to run this unknown app even when you have enabled to run unknown apps it in the settings. - My usb headphones doesn't work on a Mac. It doesn't have a microphone jack so my other headphones also doesn't work. I am not saying there is no fix for all of the above, and I am not even looking for answers. What I am trying to say is when I try to use Mac in my office it gets in my way (Mostly due to design choices Apple made on behalf of you). It makes my system admin feel stupid even they are very good at windows and linux. It works great at my home for surfing and watching movies. :)

  • Using a Mac, [a bit over] a week later
    R Rutvik Dave

It is nice, until you start doing something serious with it. It gets job done when the job is simple. But when you start using it for serious work, it really gets in your way. And like all the other Apple products it will make you feel stupid / frustrated with simple tasks even if you are a pro. Yes, the Finder is a bad design. I still remember googling for 'How to rename a file in Mac' (there is no option in Edit menu also :omg: ), 'How to do a slideshow in Mac', 'How to open a file using Keyboard in Mac' and few other embarrassing searches, and it was really simple but not-intuitive (take that Apple) like press Enter (rename), press Space-bar (slideshow) and press Ctrl + Down Arrow (open). It took me few days to get over the lack of Backspace key, specially when I was coding. And it still annoy me that Mac can read, but can't write to my external HDDs, because they are formatted with NTFS. When you backup/import your Music/Photos with iTunes/iPhoto, you can't find it on the HDD anywhere. Also be gentle/careful with the power adapter, the cable 'will' break (near the power pin) and it will cost you an arm (take a look at its reviews on Apple Store). And be ready for GBs and GBs of updates every few days. Apps will get updated for the latest version of a Mac OS, even if you are using an older version. The Mac App-Store's prices will make you laugh, > $100.00 for Apps that does so much little. So most of the negatives are due to the awful Mac OS and not because of Mac (They know hardware but don't know software, opposite of Microsoft), if you install Windows on it. It will be very useful. ;P On the positive side: I really like the portability, track-pad, keyboard feel, display, long battery life, overall built-quality and other people's oh wow expressions (which, I will never understand why).

  • Advice on Visiting Austin, TX,
    R Rutvik Dave

4th Street at night is very happening place in the downtown. Also if you have time the view from the Mount Bonnell is very pleasant at sunset, I don't remember the name but we visited a nice cafe near the river there. The office hours traffic is crazy in Austin, so try to avoid that.

  • Google IO 2015
    R Rutvik Dave

After watching Google IO Keynote I think it's time to switch to Android, despite the annoying issues of Android. Specially the new UI with Material Design is very nicely done. Quick recap in 10 minutes[^] I am currently using Windows Phone. It works just fine but I think Microsoft is taking too long to catch-up. I don't know why they are so slow. The Outlook Mail app, which is very good on iOS and Android is not even available for Windows Phone. Windows Phone 10's new features looks like a minor version, more like a v 8.2.

  • Simple question for the Database Rock Stars
    R Rutvik Dave

10,000 is very low number to compare anything for performance. When you compare XML / Flat file with database the only advantage you get is write performance and cheaper cost. Which is never a deciding factor for any application, whether its enterprise or consumer. The things you can get with database and not with xml are: - Concurrency (You can control if you have insert/update at the same time on your data) - Transaction Reliability (You can go back to an older data/snapshot to correct a mistake) - Backup (You can configure very efficient backup policy i.e. log shipping / replication which is not possible with XML) - Partitioning (You can store data to different database/location based on region and then retrieve it easily) - Archiving (Transfer data to archive in realtime and then access it in realtime with linked database) - Security (fine grain control over who can access what) - And the most important, Well Structured and Connected Data (makes complex query for different reports very easy) So I would suggest you to use XML for intermediate stuff, or to store settings. but other than that don't waste your time and efforts. Just go with the RDBMS. And for Mobile device to store offline stuff you can use XML / JSON Documents (JSON is better than XML). But at the end you should have a RDBMS server and Sync your offline data to it.

  • Shiny new mechanical keyboard
    R Rutvik Dave

Few days back my keyboard keys started sticking, can't really complain because it lasted whooping 14+ years. Ordered the very same keyboard again (TVS-e Bharat Gold PS2 Keyboard[^]) and the good thing is, nothing really changed (except now the color is black instead of white + grey) same rock solid mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Blue switches. This is the closest you can get with those awesome IBM Keyboards on 486 computers [insert nostalgic smiley]. And even crazy it only costs ~ $30.00 I wanted to purchase the 'das keyboard'[^], but the newest model is not available in India. But I am very happy with this keyboard. Do you code using a PS2 Mechanical Keyboard? Which keyboard do you use? Grrrr.... How is any of the above is spam / abusive ? :|
