 I'm not yet an old fart, but I can identify with a lot of your experiences, having written some free (and open source) software myself. Especially with the last one

I don't know of any way to get more virtual address space beyond 3 GB for a 32 bit process on a 32 bit OS, and that's with the /3 GB switch enabled (without resorting to "window" based tricks). Raymond[^] also says the same thing.

Hence, I am not able to understand the extra RAM thing.

The OS (64 bit) would be able to use all the RAM, and 32 bit processes also get the full 4 GB of virtual address space to themselves (would have been only 2 - 3 GB on a 32 bit OS). Both should help memory hungry applications run faster.

Just read your article on Visual Studio extensibility. Good job! There is one typo though - in the line "In the text box provided enter "AVRStudio 5.0"", a comma is missing between AVRStudio and 5.0. The screenshot shows the right text though.

    S S Senthil Kumar

May I know what purpose you need it for? GPPG[^] is pretty much like yacc, but spits out C# code. It can also be asked to generate glue code for integration with a Visual Studio language service. Oh, and ANTLR is a LL parser, which means your grammar is slightly restricted (no left recursion).

I'm curious, what kind of coding problems do you give? Also, you don't expect candidates claiming X years of experience in technology Y to know about it, with the expected level of competence varying by years of experience?

The features provided by boost don't count as language features, IMO. But yeah, I didn't know about the 0x features. Nice that C++ is evolving with the times. I didn't understand the bad nothing of these features though.

    S S Senthil Kumar

Well, I personally love any language feature that helps express my intent concisely, and I must say I use closures and lazy evaluation a lot. Besides, it's not like these features were invented by the C# language designers - they've been around for a long time in functional programming languages. I'm curious though - do you dislike these features because they increase the level of abstraction from the machine?

That might have been true for C# 1.0, but C# now has closures, delegates, anonymous types, lazy evaluation (yield) which AFAIK, neither C++ nor Java have. Of course, you could write code yourself to get the same effect, but I hope that's not what we are talking here.

I've been interviewing candidates a fair bit recently, and unfortunately, a lot of people still seem to have trouble *writing* generic classes and methods.

    S S Senthil Kumar

That would work only if the source of the DoS attack is an infected machine. There are other "reflection" attacks, where infected machines send IP packets to normal machines with the sender (spoofed) set as the server under attack. The normal machines respond to the request, and the requests flood the server.

Having never driven a diesel before, I tried driving my uncle's Indica some time back. It took me some time to just get the car to accelerate when I wanted to - like you said. I'd floor it, it wouldn't move any faster for a few seconds, and then there'd be this massive surge of power when I didn't expect it. Was kind of scary for a while.
