  • as usual. Write code gets borked. beat head against wall for a day or so. Ask for help. Solve it within an hour.
    S SimonRigby

Yup I hear you. I think it has to do with the fact that when you are dealing with it yourself you have too much internal tacit knowledge about your solution. Having to go back to first principals to explain it to someone else often shows you where this internal knowledge is wrong but you have moved past that part of the problem.

  • Home Office // Working From Home
    S SimonRigby

I agree with most things that have been advised apart from routine. I don't actually have a strong routine, but I do have an ethic to get things done (ie getting paid). Flexibility of working from home (and admittedly for myself) works for me. Sometimes, I'm up at 6 and straight to the desk. Other times I might run some errands first or just cut myself some slack and start later, because I can. But ultimately this flexibility still needs to work within the framework of a work plan. I have estimates and time goals for milestones in the job and I'm good and not letting myself slip behind them because of this flexibility. In other words it must be done today but there are 24 hours in a day and I can choose which ones I work. My 2c

I think that's the issue right there .. its not regions that's the problem .. its inconsistent use. You could say the same for any tool/practice. I use them to group things away that I don't need to see, like private members etc, and I use them consistently for this reason.

  • Background thread .. really?
    S SimonRigby

I just loaded a big solution into Visual Studio 2010 (10 projects in the solution). After it had a loaded, big dialog box which 'stole' the UI, told me it was processing requests from a background thread. Am I the only one to see the irony here

Very true. Why do you need to respond to user demand if they're going to buy the thing anyway. The iPhone is clearly devised with Joe Average consumer in mind. So did MS (or others) miss the boat a bit in seeing the switch from corporate to personal use (or more accurately how much this switch would mean to the bottom line?)

  • So where is the new Borland?
    S SimonRigby

Erm .. so if it was so good, I point you back to your question. Where is it now? I don't get this flakey IDE argument (MS). I see a lot of people make this sweeping argument about the IDE being flakey. From 'my personal experience' I don't have issues with VS. I find it reliable, and I'm productive with it. Sure there are things I wish worked differently and in some cases a couple of hours with the Macro IDE and I can do that myself. But I just don't get the flakey bit. Maybe I've not come across the issues you have had. As for a competitor to MS, the dev market is huge and a decent effort that attracted even a small percentage of that market (ie sub 1%) would be a going concern. I'm a great believer in competition and survival of the fittest, it just might be that the fittest is surviving.
