FYI - For those using Helpmaker 7.3 & 7.4 A recent patch from Microsoft, Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Window 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3003057), kills Helpmaker. Removing this patch will fix the issue

  • DBGrid replacement?
    S snavece

DBGrid is dated. I have a number of annoyances with it, I have listed some of my issues below. Documentation is scarce. It is not well supported in VS2012. One can crash VS2012 by editing through the Property Pages dialog (try setting the headfont to bold). Trying to provide error checking on a cell basis when leaving a cell seems dependent on what method you chose to leave the cell(Tab key versus arrow key). It is slow to fill from a database. The necessity to change rows before an update is done to the data.

  • DBGrid replacement?
    S snavece

I have an MFC C++ desktop application (unmanaged code)that still uses DBGrid. What control would be a good replacement. I am displaying record sets in the control, fixing the number of rows in the control and range checking each cell value when leaving the cells. Vertical scrolling may be necessary. Thanks for your input

I found when learning FORTRAN 40 years ago, that most of the struggles that people had in learning the language was that they could not break down their ideas into small enough steps. The problem with assembly languages is the same, but maginified even more. A line of code that you might write in a modern computer language may take a page of assmebly instructions. The "trick" for writing assembly was to get very comfortable with what the CPU actually does. Once one begins to think about the capabilities of the CPU and how it really accomplishes the tasks we programmers set it to, assembly becomes easier. Higher computer languages remove us from considering the capabilities of the CPU and have lead to bloat of the operating systems and of our programs.

  • Why is FORTRAN cool again?
    S snavece

Some of us still use computers to crunch numbers and FORTRAN is hard to beat. And as one of the previous posters said the old code still runs. I know of 40+ year old code that is still running.

Last night I was running a calculation that took about 12 hours, when we lost power for 1 hour and 37 minutes. My UPS kept the calculation running, and the answer to the calculation was waiting for me in the morning. Clayton

  • Context help systems in VC8 with MFC
    S snavece

I have ported a old MFC appliction to VC8 and have everything but the context sensitive help working. What help system - HTML Help 1, MS Help 2, Windows Vista AP help, or ... is most appropriate to use in Visual Studio 2005? Can you suggest any tutorials to lead me through the process also. Thanks
