In a word, Dreadful. In another: Remedial. I miss the access to features and content. I never use my old Hotmail account, other than registering for MSFT demo downloads like VizWebDev Express.

  • Are developers losing their independence?
    T TestShoot

http://www.forbes.com/sites/venkateshrao/2011/12/05/the-rise-of-developeronomics/[^] Basically it says we are all nerds that don't know how important we are so acquire our talent and treat us like crap, we like it that way. Battered wife syndrome. There is a HORRIBLE gap in qualified tech leads these days. I just took over this process and found out that PM's don't know anything other than their projects (and they don't know them all that well) are the most important thing in the world, and web development is like using MS Word... it is too dorky and demeaning but they could easily do our jobs.

  • The developer's golden rule, 100% true
    T TestShoot

The only sound rule that applies to all processes, standards, and approaches is the following: "The only rule, is that there are exceptions to all rules" I was talking to my coworkers (all former contractors) about SVN and when to commit, some said "on save", others "end of day" and of course "when I am done". This is interesting to me, that not everything is worth committing, and sometimes things are critical, that every line counts. This is just one of those things, we developers are pragmatic. Our careers are in constant Limbo, between heaven and hell, and the fragility is an ever-present reality. I am sure you have your own examples. X|

  • Standing desk vs treadmill desk
    T TestShoot

Treadmills cause me to have a modified walk, I feel tension in my hips and lower back, it is unnatural for me personally. When I go to a daily "stand up" SCRUM, I like standing by file cabinets with my laptop, but sitting I prefer my desktop. While standing/moving I notice a lack of desk space, and sitting, you can practically take up a whole dinner table, using every square inch. Solution: every two hours get up and take a litle walk. It keeps your energy level up, and on a hot day, you won't smell like a locker room from walking at your desk. Your feet won't hurt/stink, and your deodorant won't give out before lunch. I actually work for Beachbody, aka "p90x" and the idea of taking a little break every few hours to walk around is actually suggested. We even had that at my last job at the NFL. Right now I work in an area with tough parking and have to move my car every two hours, so sometimes I just walk to my car, and move across the street, but on a tough day, I have a quarter mile to walk back. It mixes it up, but I see the benefit, add in a massive 18" laptop from Alienware, and ther is your resistence traning! ;) So to put it mildly, get off your butt, and take a walk, it clears your mind, is good for you, and it make you look busy by being mobile, people think you are on your way to something important. *--==[::tSc::]==--* TestShoot.com Film Supplies

that has worked for a long while, but the rare few 720 or 480p movies that are on YT right now makes 22 practically useless until they add a lot more content, and by that time, it will be a button, not a url hack

  • Are we, as Developers, bored?
    T TestShoot

I totally live with Opera and IE7. I have a whole thread on Opera love. Chrome will be so marginal in the impact, I think it is a test bed for their upcoming devices and will not really be seriously used for a browser as they don't take it so seriously themselves. I predict 15% marketshare tops in a year. It is a partial abortion. On the topic, I sit at the largest trade paper in Hollywood, Variety.com, it is powered by an ASP CMS that launched mid-dotcom boom and has not been updated in about 4 years. No way is this a smart career move for me, but I am not about to suggested the *latest* technology or to drink the MS Kool Aid, though a dotnet app is probaly the best suited. The problem is we are all cutting edge, yet highly skeptical people so when things don't progress as fast as our tirst for knowledge we get antsy, then pissy and finally... dis-gruntled. We concern ourselves with what we are missing, and then when we have it all we want something *else*.
