I have a dell touchscreen monitor. The touchscreen works but it is totally useless in day to day job. The monitor quality though is very good.

  • The cost of a bug [modified]
    T thisraja

I develop traffic surveillance software and it is in use in UK to monitor speed, illegal lane changes and so on. I found out that there is a bug in the software that incorrectly reports violation and has resulted in an incorrect fine of £30. Have you ever tried to quantify how much a bug in your software costs? The most expensive bug was obviously the $3 billion bug in the mars lander(rover?) software. [Edit] In case people have not observed, the first part is a joke [/Edit]

  • I escaped
    T thisraja

My team had a meet and greet session with a few people. Most of them were professionals but one of them appeared alcoholic and was wearing tanks. I am told he carried the stench of alcohol with him. Fortunately, I was busy elsewhere and could not make it to the meet and greet session. Am I biased or do other people here feel the same way about alcoholics?

For fixing issues with Windows Media Player in the latest update. In particular, they got rid of several events in the active X player which were causing problems. This really helps prevent programmers from mis-using the APIs.

We have seen an unprecedented increase in our budget for computers. We have been tracking Internet traffic to see who is misusing these funds. "Anything you say in an Internet forum can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?" I am emailing your boss next. -- Auditors

It seems C# 5.0 is borrowing features from F# which is a good thing. I am delighted about F# language as such as a potential to develop DSLs. Anyone else did anything with F# yet.

    T thisraja

I love the Add Reference dialog box. Not only it launches fast compared to the Add Reference dialog box in VS2008, but it is also possible to sort on component name, version, runtime and path. Both .Net and COM reference list is populated almost instantly.

  • The joy of being a programmer
    T thisraja

Ten of my programmer friends (including me) planned a trip to Australia. Jetstar airlines were having a great sale yesterday. When sales prices are so good you will expect the website to have increased traffic and often it is impossible to get the tickets at the discounted price. So, we wrote an application that automated the process of booking the ticket from Jetstar. I am happy to say that we got tickets at a great price. The time and effort spent on writing the application paid off. I feel so sorry for non-programmers who might have tried to manually book the tickets and failed to do so as the web site may have crashed on them. Have you ever used your programming skills, outside of your job, to automate mundane tasks such as these?

  • Great Gift in return for my beta testing
    T thisraja

I did some beta testing for Visual studio and today I got an email with a link from where I can download Visual Studio Express 2010 for free. In the past, I was given some small items such as paper weight, glass balls, or t-shirts. This is the first time I got the actual software I helped to test. Gestures like these are what make you continue to help companies test their beta products.

  • Beware of online tickets

I booked tickets for a concert in the US online. All I had to show was my credit card at the gate. Unfortunately, my international credit card was not recognized. It seems that the card readers at the center[^] were not connected properly to serve international customers. I ended up losing $300 :((.

No, it is different than a regular cream biscuit. It is made from custard powder so it tastes a lot different than the cream biscuits you find in the market.

  • Why I resigned from my job
    T thisraja

I have been with my current company for 35 years. For 35 years I have encouraged use of open technologies at my company. Unfortunately, the programmers these days do not enjoy to work in open technologies. They rather prefer drag and drop programming offered by tools such as Visual Studio 2010. Programmers are reduced to drag and drop, and cut and paste machines. I can't bear this any more. I so long the days of vi, emacs, debugging by sprinkling code with printfs. We have moved so far from those days that I have to give up now. It is sad! I am now moving to full time job of being a basketball coach of my kids basketball team.
