  • .NET 2 UI speed issue demystified
    T Tom Ollar

If this is in reference to our article. Our tests contained NO timers. Could it be that the boys and girls at our esteemed MotherShip saw two guys in a garage and decided to nip this whole C# as a UI platform concept in the bud? Don't laugh Frank, you may be next...

  • C#: DON'T DO IT!!!
    T Tom Ollar

I place this as a warning. If you are thinking about building a "rich client" on the C# .Net Platform - think again. It's slow. So slow that the guys in Redmond lapsed into stunned silence when I explained the kind of things my company does with C#. I heard this: "But what about performance?" "How's performance?" "You're using GDI+?" "So, how many objects get created with that code?" - in an admonishing tone, of course. and again - "What about performance?" These questions, coupled with the "Visual C++ - The Ultimate Language" poster on the second floor of building 41, kind of made me think that C# was a second class citizen, or worse... So just don't do it. Who cares about "managed code" and all that OOP crap - a 23mb Framework that's not installed ANYWHERE except stupid Windows Server 2003 and all that slow, slow, slow code simply isn't worth it. If you must have awesome UI use Flash and port it over to some PC emulator thingy - hell - ANYTHING is better than C#/Framework... Well that's it. You've been warned. If you still think that C#/Framework is a real alternative then I'll leave the rest to BRUTAL EXPERIENCE - which will certainly take care of you...

  • Elegant check for .Net Framework 1.1 or 2.0?
    T Tom Ollar

The app is the MiniWalker. The current version was compiled with VS 2003 and it only runs with the 1.1 Framework. On a machine with only the 2.0 Framework installed, it crashes with the Type Initialization error. Microsoft says this is correct here. So it looks like a real setup program is the only answer... -- modified at 10:20 Saturday 5th November, 2005

  • Elegant check for .Net Framework 1.1 or 2.0?
    T Tom Ollar

When attempting to run a 1.1 based exe on 2.0, you get an ugly TypeInitialization exception. I have yet to attempt running 2.0 on 1.1 machine. Either way, assuming the app does not have access to it's native framework, does anyone know a good way to display a user-friendly message explaining the problem?

Oh, it's most definitely broke. It currently helps the readers, but penalizes the authors. Does CP want to encourage good articles? - then help the authors a bit here. Authors getting voted down without any feedback is a pretty pointless exercise isn't it? I've even seen one your articles prefaced with something like "Please don't vote without providing feedback." I'm sure that probably just encouraged the trolls... But it's not that hard to fix. A little tweak to the ole profiles, that's all. OT: For VS 2005 Tips and Tricks - is it possible to generate a .Net Framework 1.1 executable from VS 2005? If there's some way to do it that'd be a nice trick!

  • How to visualize a machine scheduling plan?
    T Tom Ollar

Just paint it in a user control - how hard could it be? 100,000 objects is too big for any C# model - figure a way to paint only the part the user can see, incrementally reading the necessary data. You can usually do this pretty well by creating a matrix of cells which fills the user control, and then "rolling" the data behind them as the user scrolls.

And I definitely appreciate that! It's not cool when two months of effort gets harpooned by a troll. Any possibility of making voters and their votes a public part of the article (as well as a public part of the voters profile). The ability to contest and cancel troll votes (voters who are not willing to defend their 1.0 vote) would also be welcome.
