As In "Big Money Wasted", or "I would not want to own one not under warranty?" I would tend to agree... BTW, I am a BASHER of MSFT, simply because I expect more from them. Also, they get the blame, because 84% of the desktops are suffering from their GOOD and BAD decisions. We all have stories to tell, because we all have experience with them. Win3.1 16 bit code? the constant need to refresh working code. Ugghhh. How about windows 10 no longer liking programs that write program data to a Data folder under the program folder... Ahhh, progress... So, it's a love hate thing. I love that I can write and sell software that runs on Windows. But I hate the fact that the definition of "Windows" is too flexible, and that MSFT will make a bonehead change (like assuming everything is a tablet), or try to run a PIG on a phone. And I am left to deal with the problems... Don't get me started with tweaking the office file formats, and thwarting standards, and giving things away free, until they become popular and competition drops, then gouging... But still not as bad as I feel Oracle has been behaving!

US Passports have RFID as well. Although the information is encrypted (ish), my understanding is that they can tell what country you are from. As in (If you get a response, and they look American, they probably are!) We use RFID Passport cases to block this. Avoiding being scanned. Anyone can build a domed signal amplifier and increase the range (in fact, the "repeater" version of this is being used to unlock high end cars by pinging against the keys in the house, boosting the signal and tricking the car to unlock the door here in the states). So, my keys go inside a metal cup when in the house. I use these for my credit cards: Amazon RFID Pouches[^] (12 for about 10USD) What I did was to CUT one long edge open, and a small flap on the corner. This lets me slip the card in and out naturally. But it appears to work quite well. I put 2 cards in one pouch. The two I use all the time. HTH

I would say, the more senior and older you become the harder it is to find a new job. Location can be key too, in the UK. Technical tests are a subjective nightmare. I'm fairly sure, after god knows how many interviews, a decision has been made on you, in the foyer, before you've even answered the first question. You've just got to keep plugging away at it and don't ever let the interview process undermine your confidence as developer. On that note, confidence in your own skills, knowledge and experience is a crucial factor in being a successful developer. Also note that every job will fundamentally change in some way within the first six months. For example, in my current role, my original line manager retired within two months.

I put it on my ASUS hybrid and the start button isn't working like the last build. It sends you to a Win 8 look start screen on one click and on a right click I get a crappy list that does at least contain shutdown and restart. There is no list of programs like what I saw in earlier builds. They are near a month from release so MS better get on the stick.

Thank you! I've been stagnating in a job where I make web apps for a federal agency, using .NET. At my very ripe old age I feel like a nube in so many areas. The Arduino and Raspberry Pi are hobbies that take the place of vegetating in front of the TV. I have started on Jeremy Blum's Electrical Engineering series using Arduino. I am over half way into Learning Python the Hard Way. It just felt so good to be using curly braces again. BTW I am keeping a copy of your reply for reference and use as a base for further study.

For what it's worth, you can also program it with C/C++. I use the same IDE (Code::Blocks) in Windows, x64 Linux and on the RasPi. In combination with wxWidgets and a wx design tool of your choice it makes for nice suite. The only thing I'm missing is a socket library on the old version of Raspian that I have. The problem is that all these b***rds want something for nothing. They *won't* pay the money for the ability, they *won't* work it out, they just want a formula to apply to save them having to think or analyse or do justice. They want to be the guy senior management pats on the head for saving x-amount of salary by hiring the cheapest. And when the product isn't up to scratch, they're long gone. Fortunately where I work they pay well, recruit quality and avoid all gimmicks. As for Polish plumbers, I hired a local West Country man to hack my garden ready for the Winter. He quoted £35 to nuke the hedges back to the Stone Age, a ridiculously low quote. He turned up on Saturday and did a superb job in pouring rain. I paid him £45. Cheap at the price, the guy was a genuine grafter, and I don't miss the extra tenner. Agile evangelists are for people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
