We had a similar situation. While the active file might help, it doesn't stop the users who have a clue potential sitting firmly in the negatives along with a determination index over 9000. To stop these folks we had a sign on the monitor itself. In order to use this machine you agree to the following: I have read this document and if I fail to follow procedures it is grounds for immediate disciplinary action up to but not only limited to dismissal, severe monatary penalties, immediate floggin, possible defenestration, noogies, severe tonguelashings, and wet willies. 1) The correct drive to remove is NOT the F drive. 2) If you are safely removing hardware, do not remove the F drive. 3) THE F DRIVE IS EVIL, DON'T TOUCH IT. REMEMBER TIME BANDITS?! 4) Seriosuly, if you remove the F drive, we will get mad because it is the only way we have of backing this up. If you do that and someone *ahem* screws up, we can't go back to a safe file that is less than a week old. You want to redo the last week? Not only will you have to, but we have logs, we will tell your friends you are the reason they have to redo those TPS reports again. 5) Failure to live up to guidelines 1-4 will result in us telling your fellow teachers you were the one that did it and they'll take care of you. Do it again and we look for windows. We had 1 person screw up after this sign was put up. There was 1 incident and after the rest of the staff started giving him an incredibly bad time it stopped happening. Peer pressure is your best weapon. If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

More general expandable re-usable solutions sounds a lot like Design Patterns. Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software [^] It won't tell you how to implement the patterns, but it gives you building blocks of general architecture. From there you can usually find articles on how to implement those patterns in various languages or even pre-built implementations. The ASP.Net MVC (Model View Controller) is an example of an implementation of a design pattern. Apache Struts is a Java implementation of the same pattern.

I guess his(her) meaning is that he(she) can use "C" language. And "C" is "expensive". So a dollar sign is added behind "C". :-D There is some white cloud floating on the blue sky. That's the landscape I like.

I have used a product called SafeHouse in the past. Although I have never used it for USB drives, I believe it can be used stand-alone from a USB without needing a full install. (For the record, I have no formal connection with SafeHouse, just a satisfied user giving a personal recommendation.) http://www.safehousesoftware.com/SafeHouseExplorer.aspx[^] I've also used a product called FileCrypt in the past which was OK. There are plenty of other similar products, I'm surprised your Google search didn't bring up more.

This is usually related to conflicting versions of the C/C++ (MSVCRTXX) runtime. Try removing those, and re-installing any applications that rely on it. On XP the problem may be a real problem, as side by side dll's where not really the bee's knees. You may try moving the required dll's outside of the windows directory, and in the directory of the requesting programs. (each with his own required version of course).

I've tried out a few tools, but finally I was spending more time time tracking, than working ;P Yes, that was ironic ;) I use excel, for me it is the simplest and most powerful tool. Phil I won’t not use no double negatives.

I know it seems a bit DIY, but could you just copy the NetMeeting EXE file and any other files it needs, across to the machines you want to use it on? EDIT: I found this on Wikipedia: The Windows Vista version of NetMeeting does not install and work properly natively on Windows 7. However, Windows XP Mode (a virtual XP computer running within Windows 7) can be used to regain all NetMeeting funtionality. Windows Meeting Space has also been removed. Microsoft SharedView requires internet connectivity, it does not work only over a local LAN.
