Christian Graus wrote: Anyhow, does anyone know what's going on in the Sun camp nowadays ? J2EE is still on the up, but I've seen loads of projects where people are wanting to get off SUN equipment. One project was even called project SunSet. Got to love that. They are viewed as been overly expensive, while the Sparc processors are viewed as underpowered. Despite that , they are the leaders in terms of CPU scaling (72-128 or so processors in a Starcat 15000), but then you need it if the CPU's are not that fast, compared to say IBM's Power 4 CPU's. Also HP's SuperDome series is pretty quick of the mark. Interesting thing about the SuperDomes is that Windows will run on them shortly. If you have a look at SQL Server benchmarks on a 32 processor Unysis box it fly's. Also NEC have beefed up their offerings. Have a look at this. http://www.tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_perf_results.asp[^] Genrally, non-clustered boxes are used in the enterprise. In the clustered section which can out perform the non-clusted by quite a bit, MS has it down to a fine art. Funny that MS is trying to move into the Big Iron, while Oracle & DB2 are trying to get good at clustering. Debs wrote: Statistically speaking, the numbers involved here must make it difficult to be representative? There are more of us around than people expect. To put it into perspective, there are something like 30,000-40,000 post-op TS women in the US alone. However, it's very hard to come across concrete figures of the actual prevalence. The best study I've seen is "How Frequently Does Transsexualism Occur?"[^] by Lynn Conway, which estimates the incidence of intense male to female (MtF) transsexualism at between 1 in 250 and 1 in 500 of the population. My own experience bears that out - now I'm "out" I've discovered that amongst my old group of friends (< 100 people) there are two of us, and also that I wasn't the only TS girl who left my school that year! A number of colleague have also come forward and told me they have TS friends. Unfortunately data is hard to come by as so many of us are in hiding - and that's especially true for trans-men (i.e. female to male or FtM). In the past much fewer of them have come forward for treatment (although biologically there seems to be no reason for the incidence being any different to MtF), though that seems to be changing. Debs wrote: They, presumably, are less likely to have children and family? That must inevitably make it easier, regardless of age. Having said that, I know one person who's mother couldn't accept that her son became a woman, such that they no longer see each other. Young transitioners have an easier time of it in a lot of ways (except financially, which can be very important), and one thing I've noticed is that most young TS girls I've met are straight, whereas those my age or above are far more likely to be lesbian or bisexual. I'm guessing that's down to the fact that young transitioners haven't spent years trying to fit-in and be "normal" as those my age have - which I know from experience screws around with your sexuality no end! Sadly, acceptance by friends or family is a lottery whatever age you are. I too have lost my parents, but am now closer to my brother than ever before. I truly hope my parents will come round one day - they may feel they've lost a son, but the daughter they never knew they had is finally here. Anna :rose: ww

That's a shame. I have to say the mainstream news channels in the UK (BBC and ITN) largely come across as unsensationalist and balanced. It's a pity you can't get them as we do - after all...CNN Europe is heavily "Americanised" so why shouldn't BBC America be "Anglicised"? ;) Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch Trouble with resource IDs? It missed out one important point. It will be enforced after a war; by the victor over the vanquished; if it suits them to bring some justification to the war. Ofcourse, immediately after WW II , people were thinking in more idealistic terms. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers
