It's a copper network, right? In that case, check the cabling as well. 1000 Base T uses all four pairs, and if auto-configuration is on, damage to one pair can cause the network to fall back to 100 MBit/s. BSODs are caused by drivers. If you have installed any hnew ardware/drivers recently, or upgraded any drivers they are suspec. Uninstall them and try see if it solves the problem. If not, you might have failing memory, ror a very rare crash. Crashes can be accumulative. When the system BSODs, system files can be damaaged. This can make crashes more and more ffrequeny t. So always take a system back up. I use Ghost. You can then o back to a stable image. If you really want to know what the bug is, install WinDbg.exe, and open the crash dump you will find in either Minidunp or the windows dir. Wen it has opened, type !analyze -v at the prompt, and it will auto analyse the crash. This will often point to the driver. Gogle the sys file named, and see if it is a known issue, or if there is an upgrade. Truth is the subjection of reality to an individuals perception

When choosing a micro the first task is to work out what you want it to do. Many have built in A to D convertors which you will need (the resolution would not be great but it would get you started). Also, you need to consider the interface. You can get micros with a USB interface built in and this would make life a bit easier for you. Alternatively, you can use any micro and add a USB interface chip. FTDI http://www.ftdichip.com do a range of modules which I have tried and got running pretty quickly, you can connect them to your micro using a parallel port or a UART and as well as the chips they sell little modules which get your system up and running very fast. At the PC end I have used both a virtual com port approach and the dll they supply without too much difficulty. Another big consideration is what development kit is available in your price bracket. Personally I have used the Microchip PIC family alot lately and they have masses of devices and cheap tools. I should also mention Zilog Z8 and the Thompsom ST6 family which are good starter devices. Good luck, regards :) Ali

If you can read German or feel competent enough to interpret a German article based on circuit layout etc.: http://www.heise.de/ct/projekte/ct-lab/[^] ADA Motherboard with up to 5 optional daughter cards (AD / DA / IO), a SDK and other goodies, free of charge (the plans, not any of the hardware - but you can solder the stuff yourself). matjame wrote: the power doesnt come on.Fans came on once then died.Nothing came on again. No bios, no screen. POST should happen before the machine goes anywhere near initialising the IDE or SATA connections. I'd suggest that the problem has very little to do with the drives, and that in fact you've either knocked out the power connector to the motherboard or blown the PSU. Have you tried another drive in this machine, or these drives in another machine?

It's better for your power usage to leave the battery out. The power consumption of the laptop is much lower when it's not topping up the battery all the time.

It's not as much what's cheaper as much as it is being assured that when you build your own, you put the best components in it that you could afford. I build my own (and have been since 1985) because I can pick/choose the components after diligent research regarding compatibility, reliability, etc, and can further make judgement calls as to where I can get away with an OEM (and most of the time, cheaper) component. I buy a lot of the components from a single source (usually NewEgg) to save shipping fees. It's not necessarily cheaper than buying a pre-built, but it's high-quality hardware, and I never have any hardware-related issues short of the two hard drives that went bad over the last 22 years. If you have one major problem, which one is it? Question #1 or question #2? Ah heck, I take a stab at both of them. Notice in my response that I'm using the American colloquial version of the square bracket, also know as the "parenthesis": 1) Dialup network? Are you insane? Why don't you connect your laptop and desktop with a CAT5 cable, and dial out to the remote client machine? 2) There is no support. You're on your own. Cowboy-up and deal with it.
