I was reading about the new 8 gig sans flash mp3 player: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/gear/entertainment/2006-08-21-sansa-announced_x.htm[^] and from the picture it is yet another iPod clone. It makes me wonder if there is any invovation left. I personally do not want a mp3 player with all the controls in a circle on the top surface of the device like the iPod, if I wanted that I would probably bought an iPod (actually still would not). I would rather see a device that is all screen on the top with some protective flip cover and possibly controls hidden under a flip or slide cover as well. Only control I would need always available on the device is a volume, pause skip to previous, next. With the fad of today, I doubt we will see such a player... :(

There is an iRiver mp3 player like that. All screen then some controls on the side, out of sight. But I think those only go up to 2/4 GB.

How long were mp3 players around before the ipod? Quite sometime if I remember correctly, but the ipod made it a big buisness... Maybe they are on to something...

Personally i'd like the 2 gig MobiBlu b153. 153 hours of battery life may come in handy, and I also like the fact that its not exactly a pretty mp3 player, less likely to be stolen next to an Ipod. Creative, SanDisk and iRiver make small players that don't follow the iPod model. (I have a 256MB SanDisk in front of my right now; now if I could only find the stupid USB cable!)

Yeah, I have noticed that small devices do not, but most larger scale models with an screen of any size usually go after the iPod look. I will probably jump into the mp3 player market this fall for one of these smaller players which happen to be cheap compared to the larger ones ;)

Yeah, if you want it taking up half the top of the device for just a couple simple functions... I would rather have screen space!

Thanks.. Did some browsing and the http://www.iriveramerica.com/prod/ultra/clix/clix-2GB.aspx#[^] Looks pretty cool. That would store a number of podcasts ;) Be nice if it was a bit larger though more like letterbox. Old eyes :)

Yeah, Apple is "marketing"! They are cult growers ;) I remember on the Screen Savers show on the old TechTV, they had a review of different MP3 players and how less expensive players offered more space and features than the iPod at 25% - 50% less, but they still said they would take an iPod... You got to love marketing like that :) Same thing for iTunes.. Paid downloads sites have been around for years, but Apple does it, everyone claims they created it... Oh well, I only wish I had the knowledge of market spin that Apple does.. Of course,, I think MS wishes they had the cult growing ability also ;)

Guess we could shrink the display to one line of text and further extended the battery life eh? I would rather one about 3x5 inches with full screen and a decent battery (one that can be exchanged). ;)

hehe. A replaceable battery would be nice. The iPod isn't perfect by any means but it is the best I have used. Also I don't see a need for a bigger screen. It is an MP3 player, not a video player and doesn't need a massive screen. (BTW I have the nano not the full-sized iPods.)
