Google is down here (as is Gmail). For a while I was kinda wondering what to do - I mean the thought of using an alternate search website didn't even occur to me for a short while :-) Eventually I used Yahoo - only to find that Smitha had just done that too on finding Google down! Yahoo's not so bad. Though when Google's back, I am going back to Google!

Yeah, I know. I'm a baaaaaad boy... :) The problem with Microsoft isn't a lack of talent. They've got a lot of great techies over there. Unfortunately, just as it is in so many other places, the techies who could really make it rock are the people with the least amount of power to make a difference. Microsoft has grown so huge they just have staggering levels of bureaucracy in place that make it almost impossible to get anything done, let alone come up with a new or creative angle on a product. Every POS bit of software that comes out of Redmond only sucks because it encountered Design by Committee. I wish Bill or Steve could afford to hire me as a consultant and give me carte blanche. I'd fire about 50% of their people, all middle managers. It would slash millions, even billions from their budget and improve their quality and responsiveness in ways they could only fantasize about today. But alas, I just don't think they're willing to spend the money. :-D

Yeah...I've seen the same thing in other companies. Too many layers of 'management'...if you can call it that. Out of control meeting culture and everyone wears a mask and is afraid to show any emotion, in case the Body Snatchers from Human Resources gets them. 'They get you while you sleep'...

Honestly, not at first. I did think of it after I thought of Yahoo. Also do you mean Live search? Or are Msn search and Live search the same now?

:laugh: Seriously though, one reason I don't use non-Google search engines is that I am worried I'd miss out on some useful hits. Like someone else said just now, if your name doesn't bring up your website and blog as first and second search results, it's not safe to use the search engine for serious searching.

And what I really don't get is why that's hard, at least for cash flow rich guys like Yahoo, Microsoft, etc. It's not because the geeks aren't good enough, it's because management and marketing continually get in the way. If only the geeks had the run of the farm...

As in , real stuff like 'where is that wine from?'. My rule - google for finding technical information, localised yahoo for finding real-world stuff / local companies websites.

I've been using AltaVista as my start page lately in an attempt to reduce my Google usage. Yahoo's start page is too tabloid, all that celebrity crap and news that you don't want to know :)

I honestly don't think Google is all the much better than Live, I just think it's so embeded in everyone's mind to use it or "Google" it. Anyway, i'm not a big fan of Gmail at all, I only use to have clients send me large files or for much of my "sign up" spam.

My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkI've found on the odd occasion that dogpile(yes, its real) www.dogpile.com which is a meta search engine can come up with some useful results, and if one of the contributing search engines are down, you dont notice too much degredation of the search. Stuart

Agreed, search results aren't as good but it gets you there. I DID always use AltaVista in the 90's...Google just seemed to come out of nowhere and everyone magically started using it exclusively. Anyway, Google is never going to have any real competition unless we make an effort to use other search engines...er, that's my thinking, anyway :) ...I was about to say that MSN was even worse than Yahoo but I just looked at Microsoft's new Live Search[^] ...not bad...gonna try it for a while...make Steve Ballmer happy ;)

If you use Firefox there are a couple of convenient ways of trying out other search engines. Try this search on[^] CustomizeGoogle[^] Or for IE... CustomizeGoogle for IE[^] Having said that I still mostly use Google! :)

It's the bandwagon effect. Rather like how Microsoft became dominant with Office. Except that it's technically easier to switch from Google than it is from Office. For me with Google there's also the fact that I'm enmeshed with so many complementary products that it's difficult to switch permanently. E.g., I use the functionality behind the toolbar a lot and also GMail. Competitors have to be able to replicate that to win me over.

I know...I'm finding it hard to wean myself off it. There isn't any really good reason for that behaviour...it's just a habit. I'm using Microsoft Live as my start page now...that helps. So far, it's been finding what I'm looking for just as well as Google. Thanks for the suggestions :)
