Well, since you opened the door and invited comments, here are mine. You are paid to work, not tell jokes that may offend people. What you find mild and humourous may very well be offensive to other people. If you don't like the environment - leave. Tim

Exactly!  Do not complain, or bring suit.  Keep it to yourself, and get out.    Peace!

Indeed, I have no use for either a moist carpenter or his soggy wood.

I had no intention for it to sound that way, although I realised what I had typed pretty quickly. I left it in for the comedy value :)

Somebody shoot me...    I would love to meet the people that come up with the material for these training courses, and spend 2 hours with them to show them what real harassment is all about. :)    One of my favorites - someone starts telling a joke, and from the opener you can tell that it could be racy.  Does the overly-sensitive employee leave the group knowing their limitations and that they might get offended?  Nope, that would be FAR too easy.  Instead, they do the logical thing, of course -- they hang around, listen to the entire joke, laugh with everyone else, and then run to HR to complain about it.    Hey!  Here is a simple concept - how about sneaker-netting yourself out of the room next time and save everyone else the trouble? :)    Heh...  I love this Politically Correct, everyone's-feelings-matter-except-the-one-telling-the-joke stuff.  I really do.    Ahhh...  I feel better now...    Anyone else feel the same about all this PC stuff?  Or is it just me?    Peace!

If they'd at least tell their concerns right there! Complaining anonymously at a higher-up office that cannot ignore the request is completely antisocial. We need that mechanism for serious cases, guys! That's like calling 911 because your milk went bad.

Mimicking a foreign accent in a derogatory manner could
contribute to a hostile work environment based on national
              origin.

OK...  Is there a way to mimic an accent in a non-derogatory manner?    Peace!

Of course. Actors do it all the time.

I recall one occurrence about 30 years ago at a major oil company where I worked. One week, everyday at lunch hour, a beautiful blond girl walked into an older engineer's office, closed the door and muffled laughter was heard for the next hour. At the end of the week, the engineer was called into a supervisor's office and severely reprimanded -- apparently the secretaries where offended by the goings-on. The older gentleman explained that the beautiful blond was his daughter, who happened to be in town for the week attending a conference down the street and they decided to visit over lunch, which his wife prepared and sent along. On another occasion, when my wife was traveling, I took all of my daughters and step-daughters and grand-daughters out to lunch one day. While in the restaurant, a woman who knew my wife was traveling saw me with 5 gorgeous women and complained that I was a lecherous old man, blah, blah. My "ladies" all played along and told her they didn't know I was married. I thought it was absolutely hilarious and suggested the the woman take a picture to show my wife when she returned.

An employee in my company broke her leg in her honeymoon. The manager said "they must had a lot of fun" to another employee. A third employee over-heard it and reported to HR. The manager was fired.

That is the biggest problem I have with this whole "offended" crap.  It does not have to have any basis in reality or common sense.  These secretaries were offended about something that was not even happening!    They should have been offended about being too damn shallow to come up with a better reason and decided to keep it to themselves.  Or maybe even think that if someone was going to be engaging in any fooling-around, they would not be doing it in their office at lunchtime!    Peace!

She knew your wife, but didn't know you had daughters, etc. I doubt she'll learn her lesson.

Oh, she knew we had daughters, but they are all grown, so she had never met them. Any way, in my experience, people who worry about other people's lives and have time to spend getting offended , generally have other issues and rarely learn. I guess she figured our daughters were as ugly as me, not gorgeous like my wife ....

                                    About touching...

Before you touch someone, ask yourself:
Is it possible that someone might see the physical contact and be offended?

What? **_SEE_** THE PHYSICAL CONTACT AND BE OFFENDED?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!  Just observe it and be offended?!    I need to get off this human race train...! :) [edit]    I shudder to think what could happen if my wife and kids visit and I happen giving them a hug or, God Forbid, give my wife a kiss, and BE SEEN DOING IT!!!    Peace!

Peace!

I went on one of those then realised it was about prevention :-O Seriously, a good course is very useful (esp. if you manage people) but bad ones wreck the workplace.

Yup, I agree....But unfortunately, I can't really say what I really think here in case I offend someone. Best saved for the soap box. What's the difference between women and....oh no...hang on.....women won't like that....what's the biggest cause of.....oh.....not that one either....An English man, an.....nope, racist...A dyslexic man walks into....Dammit all the best jokes are offensive.

Use a otherwise nondescript white male, they cannot be offended.
