Indeed, but stop listening as a musician. I should have added that this only works for quick bends; if you've got to sustain it more then you have to go the whole hog.

I read that Stevie Ray Vaughan used 52-10s with a 12 on the high E string, so I did the same.

I did that for a while - it takes some getting used to, and you have to adjust the springs on your trem to support it, but it does sound great. I moved up to 4 springs to counteract the tension.

My strat and tele have thicker strings, and I play them a lot when I am in a blues mood, as I am now, but I am doing that with 20 years of playing under my belt. When I was starting out, it was a different story.

I do, tried using the whammy instead of bending but that'll take too long to practice and nail.

Only one, I'll try two so there's less force on the blistered finger.

It also sounds very different. I would not plan on using it as a substitute.

You should pretty much always do a bend that's more than a quarter tone with your ring finger, with the other two fingers behind it also reinforcing the bend. Also, if you're struggling, you can hook your thumb over the neck, Hendrix style, and then your bend becomes a squeeze, which is easier as your supported in both directions. If you can get it where you live, i recommend a magazine called 'Guitar Techniques'. It's full of lessons at all levels, every month.

Metronone practice is also good. Another thing I use a lot, is backing CDs, that come with magazines, to give me a band to just jam along with.

OK, then you should have no trouble with bending those. Still reinforce the bends tho.

Well, you also don't need to bend as far down there to find your note. The main issue I find down there, is getting your fingers behind the frets as often the fret gap is too small for your finger to sit between two frets. I've never had a blister from playing guitar, are you sure that is the cause ?

I may have misunderstood your post, so here goes my other advice. Enjoy yourself, and try to relax - as CG says, you'll end up playing too fast if you don't. Have your playlist written down and taped somewhere visible - I used to like the back of my monitors for it. Include the settings for your FX pedals on there (and have plenty of spare batteries if they need them). Have multiple guitars available tuned and retuned, on guitar stands; have multiple plectrums available somewhere easy to get to. The reason you need them tuned and retuned is that you'll tune them, then they'll go out of tune if there's too much humidity in the room. I used to have an electronic tuner in my FX chain so that I could check the tuning between tracks, I'd just switch over to that channel and I could fine tune without anybody having to hear it. Also, have spare guitar leads available just in case one goes belly up before the gig. Have plenty of water onstage in a bottle - you will sweat on stage. Finally, try not to dribble - if you concentrate too much when you're playing (which you will because you'll want to nail it), a little bit of drool will escape as your facial muscles go limp.

ROTFL - I am guilty of pulling solo faces, but I don't think I've ever dribbled..... Do you use a wireless ? I do, I love it. But, one more thing to change batteries on.

Well, everyone knows that Dave Matthews is a pretty heavy drinker and is quite into the narcotics. He did, at one point, decide to break away from his "vices" and the band then went on to produce Everyday. Most, I think, would say it was their worst album...they went all calculated pop. So, he went back to the booze and they're better again.

I used to play 9's but I decided that I didn't quite like the sound. It wasn't meaty enough for me. I went back to 10's. I also use 40's on the big E.

Me and some friends started a band about 6 weeks ago. We have our first gig tomorrow night and hundreds of people are coming. I've been practicing some solo's I'm playing to perfect them, solos that require alot of string bending... I now have blisters on my finger tips... :sigh: Any tips from the other guitarists here? CG? Nope, I'm not joking, why would I be joking? People also put formaldehyde on the fingertips in these situations.

CG? Master Yoda?

Nothing I could say would strike a chord with you. I could say "G, let me axe you a question", but you'd just bridge that question and tune me out. Maybe you'd pickup a hint from someone else, or you'd pick your own resolution from after feeling a leather strap on your back. Of course, you'd want to sing it out loud and become a Telecaster of things to come, and maybe string everyone else along. Don't fret though - we'd all crane our neck in wonder because we know your hollow brain goes with your hollow body, and that if you encountered a pothole in the road of life, you'd guitar and fix it yourself before it gave you A-flat.

Haven't read all the way through the replies so this might be a repeat, but try using CrazyGlue on your fingertips. I played in bands through my teens and twenties and remember quite a few of my guitarist buddies using crazy glue when they were coming back to it after being away for a while. Don't do it all the time because you want to develop the naturally occurring callous, but it will get you through a gig. It's kinda nasty looking as it begins to wear off (and it takes a while to wear off) but hey, this is ROCK 'N ROLL man!
