When answering questions, I find myself always referring to other OP's as 'he' or 'him'. Now if I see the person's full name (and it's a Western Name), that may be all right. However, lots of OP's use aliases, and to be honest, I'm at odds to determine a person's sex from his/her name when it's an African or Asian name. On the other hand, I don't want to write he/she or her/him all the time, as it cramps my style, and wears out the keyboard. Would it be a good idea to add this information to the OP's profile, and maybe overlay the OP's icon with a little symbol that allows us to address people politely and correctly? (Chris, and think of the data mining possibilities: statistics on the battle of the sexes, who gets the most 5's, who writes the most crap articles? :-D )

Sexism, a term coined in the mid-20th century,[1] is the belief or attitude that one gender or sex is inferior to, less competent, or less valuable than the other. Calling an anonymous poster "him" on this forum is, basically, good old statistics. I don't say "him" because I think a girl can't program, I say "him" because it's right significantly more often. Feel free to downvote me for my next statement: If she feels discriminated by having to point out my mistake to receive the correct attribution, it's not my problem. Get help, or at least learn to ask for it. If there are 5 girls on this world who won't enter CompSci because they have been called "he" on a forum two times in a row, get lost. You ego is in the way, not your gender.

Put a disclaimer in your sig, something like: "Dear reader, since I do not know your gender and because I think it is irrelevant to our discussion. I will henceforth address everybody, male or female, with a male attribution to make my writing more enjoyable to read. I appologise for any inconvenience I may have caused you or your momma."

Have you not realised that words 'He' and 'She' both contain H and E and that 'Him' and 'Her' are 3 characters in length. So I think you're mistaken about wearing out your keyboard. In fact refering to someone as 'He' and 'Him' would prolong the life of your keyboard. I love being a smart-arse :-D

I think it's illegal in most European Countries, if your database is held in the confines of the EU. (you have to register your database with the authorities) However you must also allow people to change the information you keep about them, so gender changers, welcome :-)

If a woman here wants it known that's she's not man, and her user ID doesn't actually suggest her gender (like "Trollslayer"), she'll say something when she gets tired of being referred to as he/him. Given that an overwhelming percentage of programmers are male, I would say that putting too much time into being politically correct is a huge waste of time.

For example, Hillary may be male or female, and my MD is called Patrick Mary Joseph Tattan. Even your name only indicates your sex, however, your gender is your own business. (I suspect masculine though, given the posts). However, as you say, anyone who wishes to be addressed in the correct personal pronoun ought at some point indicate which would be the correct one.

Unless you go to the bother of using gender neutral pronouns this would cause more trouble that it's worth. If someone is actually sexist it gets dealth with. Trust me. ;) Signed The Tigress :laugh:
