I use VB all the time (only because I have to), and consider myself to have license to ridicule the language. Maybe that's why I'm more okay with having people (like you) make the occasional offhand comment about it.

To be fair John, I only rib you a little from time to time because I know how much it annoys you having to use it. I am fully aware that you are way more comfortable with C#, (I use it occasionally), but I am forced to use VB at work because a) XL VBA and b) boss likes to be able to follow the code and he can't use C#. I can live with the taunts, I am a big boy!

I'm leaving, just had enough. There are others who have left without saying but I decided I owe it to the good folks here (Chris, Pete, DD, DaveAuld, Griff and others) to say why. Basically there is an element of blatant elitism that turns into attacks/ridicule on others whether it be blondes or Visual Basic. I have been told to my face I can't do my job because of my hair colour wirth response that I should just live with it or sink to their level. Also Visual Basic, whether it is VBA or VB.NET, has it's place for different users yet some here decide they can ridicule anyone who touches it. These are two examples of an underlying attitude I do not wish to be associated with so goodbye everyone and take care. I have asked Chris to delete my account. Elaine :rose:

I understand exactly what you are saying. Elaine. This is not the Code Project that used to exist and the vicious and personal attacks that you and others have undergone is not to be born. I will miss reading your thoughts and ideas which have always made me think even (or especially) when we didn't agree.

It's faux elitism, for running jokes. For example, the only time I ever say anything bad about VB (which is a fully functional programming language, love it or hate it) is to pull John's leg. I actually use VB for mock-ups, because it's just so damned easy to do things like that with it -- I can't use it for real work, because this is a Java hellhole shop. And no-one truly believes that blondes, Irishmen, "polacks", or whatever are really all stupid, so don't take an instance of a running joke as a personal attack -- it's just a running joke; a theme (and if there's one thing that devs like, it's reusable themes).

I just want to add my hope that you reconsider. The last 10 years of my career have been in VB6/VBA and some VB.NET, and while I, at times, really have to agree with John Simmons regarding the... umm... idiosyncracies (Yeah! good word!) of the language, it does (still and usually) get the job done. It's always popular to take swings at out-moded tech (COBOL, VB, Windows.... :D) but any criticisms should always be pointed at the technology, and not the users of the technology (i.e. us!). We can, and should, take (constructive) criticism of our use (or misuse) of the technology, but the line between joking and offense is easily crossed. I hope that those that offended you feel sufficiently guilty for causing you distress, and I also hope you will rise above and re-join us when you feel up to it. :rose: -EM

Elaine, I haven't seen the attacks you mention. I code in VB (or any other language) when needed. I sincerely hope that Chris decides not to delete your account and that you have a change of heart. I always enjoy your wit and observations. If someone does indeed attack you here, ignore them -- they are the worse off for it, not you. If you really are serious, I wish you the best and hope that you have success in all your endeavors. But most all of us are hoping this is just some sort of joke you are playing on us all.

I agree with the elitism charge, having been a victim of it myself. And it does get a bit tiring. I've decided to ignore most of it. VB is certainly held in low regard here, and as a result, it receives a fair amount of flak. But, I think most of it (at least all that I have seen) is meant as good-natured fun. I'm quite sure any ridicule you have seen was not meant personal. Whether it was or not, perhaps you should consider the source. "If you take offense when none is intended, you're a fool.
