I'm leaving, just had enough. There are others who have left without saying but I decided I owe it to the good folks here (Chris, Pete, DD, DaveAuld, Griff and others) to say why. Basically there is an element of blatant elitism that turns into attacks/ridicule on others whether it be blondes or Visual Basic. I have been told to my face I can't do my job because of my hair colour wirth response that I should just live with it or sink to their level. Also Visual Basic, whether it is VBA or VB.NET, has it's place for different users yet some here decide they can ridicule anyone who touches it. These are two examples of an underlying attitude I do not wish to be associated with so goodbye everyone and take care. I have asked Chris to delete my account. Elaine :rose:

I'm a little ticked off with you, especially if you are serious about this decision. I think you are having a bad time right now in your life maybe and the crap that goes on at this site has pushed you over the edge a bit. Completely understandable. Take a little time off like CG did. I want you to know that a programmer friend of mind sits about 10 feet away from me and codes straight VB/VB.Net/VBA and he makes about 70-75K a year...not bad in my book. The retards that tease other people about VB constantly are just that, retards and they probably live from paycheck to paycheck. --My thoughts about you leaving.

I thought it was just friendly teasing... I used to program in VB... And my hair used to be blond! (Darkened in my teens).

That's not an insult... That's an opportunity! It's like the perfect setup for a punchline, when you make them eat their words later. Anyway... If you really want to skip town, that's your choice. Suddenly this is reminding me of the farewell message I wrote to my Warcraft guild after five years... I don't regret leaving WoW, but I do miss hanging out with them sometimes. So, good travels to ya... We'll probably still be here if you decide to come back.

a big fat AMEN to that one. That game ate up my life for 5 years before I came to my senses and realized it as no longer a game but a job that I paid to play( I was a hardcore raider). But like you said, I do miss hanging out and chatting with my friends from China, Columbia, Canada, all over the states, UK and the list goes on of people/nationalities we had in our large guild(I was one of the original officers so knew everybody.)

I'm sorry to hear you are going, you have contributed so much here. I am sorry if any comments I made about VB have effected you, truly they were written in jest. I hope this hasn't been taken as beyond the normal inter-nicene language ribbing. I didn't see the more personal attacks, but am saddened to find out this has happened. I hope you come back at some point, but in any case, all the best.

This is a shame. If anything, those who have ridiculed you (and in so doing violated the rules here) should be either warned or kicked out. I hope you reconsider. I'm strictly a "recreational coder" and VB.Net is the only .Net language I know. I've seen some ridicule of the language itself at CP although I don't recall seeing anyone being slammed for using it.

Let me start by saying I hope you reconsider. You may not want to hear that from me after our exchange yesterday regarding blonde jokes. It was insensitive of me to carry on like that with you. While I still believe in my point of view, it is obvious to me that you are sensitive when it comes to that subject. If I were conversing with you in person, I'm certain I would not have pressed the matter. However, one of the great things about Code Project is that we can push beyond those artificial boundaries in society and really get into the meat of an issue. I'm sorry if my pushiness is one of the reasons you are leaving. But that is your choice, so do what you must. If the others are right and you are experiencing some personal issues (I am not aware of any specifics) you are working through, I hope you will just take a break from Code Project rather than leave for good. Maybe it would help if you remember not only the bad times, but the good times as well (times it sounds like you've had with Chris, Pete, DD, DaveAuld, Griff, ...). By the way, I code primarily in VB.NET and the CEO/President of the company I work for (5,000+ employees and locations around the world, the leader in the industry) is a blonde woman. Just thought I'd throw that out there. If this really is your last post, I wish you well, but I wish you'd reconsider even more. :rose:

Same here, though I refused to let them make me an officer, even though by the end, I had been in the guild longer than something like 90% of the members. I was the guy who rarely signed up for a raid in advance, and when I did, it was always "I'll be there unless I find something to do in real life." On the other hand, I was the guy who had (at least) one max-level character of every class, had tried out nearly every spec, and had a habit of taking over tactical command of any raid where someone wasn't firmly in that role. I'd join a raid saying, "Ok, someone else has to lead this one," but I'd end up doing it anyway... That was actually my favorite part... It was like a puzzle... You have this list of raid members with these skill levels, these gear levels, and these talent specs... Figure out how to arrange them so they can beat this kind of raid boss... I love puzzles. I eventually quit because of the "daily" quests... I started falling behind the curve, because I refused to treat WoW like a job and do those. Still, had some good times running pick-up raids, chatting with everyone on vent, etc... Oh well.

When you're dis'n VB, it doesn't matter, but the 0-index thing is obviosuly not in reference to the .Net version... At this point in the game, I really shouldn't have to resort to establishing street cred where knowledge of VB is concerned. :)

It works 4 me. I've written several apps for my own use in VB and they do quite well. Even got decent votes on a couple of articles. In truth, I'm one of a comparative handful of "victims" of a weird bug that keeps me from using VS to create new C# projects. I always get an "Access Denied" error. I've scoured the Internet for solutions (one purported "solution" nearly wrecked my computer). MS says they consider the problem resolved because they can't duplicate the error. In other words, they're clueless. I recently downloaded SharpDevelop and it creates new C# projects without any problem. So when time allows I might play with C# and see what all the fuss is about. I must admit though, that I dislike all those curly braces and semicolons. I get enuff of that with Javascript. :)

Access denied has nothing to do with the development environment or language you are using for coding. It is a matter of, err, access permissions.
Alan Burkhart wrote:

The Internet is truly democratic. On the internet opinions are like @ss holes, everyone has one. Use any solution you get from the Internet at your on peril.
Alan Burkhart wrote:

Not being able to duplicate the problem has more to do with how much information you gave about the circumstances leading to the problem than not being able to reproduce the problem.

Why bother if VB suits you needs as a recreational coder?

Curse those languages that use "C" like syntax. Why did a lot of professional development languages like C#, JavaScript, PHP, C++, Objective C, Pascal, etc., use "C" like syntax instead of using VB syntax which is well suited to recreational coding.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)yeah I had 8 geared out lvl 80s when I quit. my wife had 6... I was an officer back before AQ made the scene and MC was THE place to beat. So I had helped to build the guild up. Like you I ran raids, coordinated crap etc.. I helped design our points system and guild rules etc... the difference was though I was the guy who you could put money on being there.. until the end at least. The last few months I "played" I did little but gold farm while having private chats with the aforementioned friends from all over. I somehow had also landed the role of personal life advisor to half the guild...And when I left we had almost 400 members(individual members, not 400 different toons). Nah I don't miss the wasted hours upon hours(average 30 a week or better) sank into that life eating monstrosity of a game. I'm just glad I wised up when I did.
Ian Shlasko wrote:

in the end times, that was more fun than running guild raids on my official regular toon. running with total strangers on my alts. I guess the regular guild raids got old because of all the 30 year old 5 year olds..and the mental stress that came with sorting out the idiotic things they came up with to argue about during a raid.
