Well, I can't help but think that there is some invisible political agenda going on which will of course be leaked at some point. On the other hand, if what he speaks the truth: However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to steer the boat of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me. then he has my respect - it's rare for someone to admit that. Then again, Nagy's post is an interesting counter-point, but I also think that if the Pope is chosen by God's will, it doesn't take away Man's freedom to be humble and declare himself unfit for that calling. My BlogIt is an interesting debate, but on the surface he is an old man and he feels that the Church will be better served by someone else. There is Canon Law that allows the pope to resign and it is, of course, through much prayer that these decisions are taken. [FYI I am not a Cat Lick, but URC which is probably as far away from Rome as you can be theologically, however dearest Mrs Wife is of that team and we are obliged [for her] to bring up the girls in the Cat Lick faith.] Tonight I may say to the girls: Vilmos: Who's the Pope? Girls: Benedict! V: Wrong!

I've had the latest from our resident Cat Lick, Mrs Wife. This is a very interesting state as the man is selected by God [allegedly] it is not his choice to accept or decline the post. In the same vein only God can decide if he should stop doing the job - normally achieved through removal of privileges; breathing to start with. Now if he didn't want the job, then he's saying that God made the wrong choice, which makes God wrong and so He is fallible which totally refutes the Cat Lick teaching. On the other hand, if God chose the right man but he's decided to spend more time with his choristers, that still looks pretty shitty for Him. I will be very interested to hear what has to be said next Sunday at Mass.

My understanding is that this reasoning is flawed as it pre-supposes the conclave itself is infallible in determining the will of god. I suspect the only way not to take the position is to say that you don't believe the conclave has come to the right conclusion. There again I'm not RC, so it makes even less sense to me than it does to others.

Pope Benedict set to resign at the end of the month. Source[^]. This is meant to be a neutral news item from me - it's not intended to kick off a religious/atheist debate, but I've posted it here because I know that trying to keep the kiddies from having a go at each other is futile.

As the original poster said I am not trying to start a debate. Here is some food for thought. Path to the Papacy[^] A look at how the Pope is chosen. The new elected Pope can indeed decline the position. However, Blessed John Paul II has offered this bit of advice
Quote:
"I also ask the one who is elected not to refuse, for fear of its weight, the office to which he has been called, but to submit humbly to the design of the divine will. God who imposes the burden will sustain him with his hand, so that he will be able to bear it. In conferring the heavy task upon him, God will also help him to accomplish it and, in giving him the dignity, he will grant him the strength not to be overwhelmed by the weight of his office."
It is a very difficult position to fill. You are indeed correct that all Popes including the first one Peter himself are fallible. Heck, we all are. I also would like to hear what he has to say in his next homily.

My BlogAnything said by the clergy needs a special decoder ring or something, normally the basis of what has been said is true but the lines have gaps miles wide to fit the text that needs to be read between them. My guess is he's tired of fighting the paedophile scandals fall-out, and the probable pressure to end the celibacy that is seen as a contributing factor and the recruitment crisis this is causing. That said, I had the same gut reaction that there is something deeper behind this, but we'll never find out as the Vatican is excellent at keeping secrets. Never mind, here is a picture of a Pope[^]

Says he didn't want to be Pope in the first place, and was looking forward to retirement when the last fella died. Can a prospective Pope turn it down? Seems to my very limited knowledge and some quick reading there is something of a lack of candidates at the top end of the organisation. I wonder if it might be a good gig to try and get in on. I quite like religion, the pomp and ceremony, the costumes and buildings and so on. It is the faith bit I have a complete lack of. I've bluffed my way through tougher interviews though.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends. Shed Petition[^]
All of the younger candidates have brains that are at least tuned to the latter half of the 20th century (21st century is too much to hope for), so they need to go as old as possible to keep things as medieval as possible.

I like it too, I feel like it's being able to witness quaint, ancient rituals without having to bother with the complications and potential paradoxes of time travel. Like watching a procession for the pharoah in ancient Egypt, or if you could watch expensive royal ceremonies paid for by the people in the British Empire.

You are correct Peter was indeed an apostle, but a special one at that. Take a look at the following links so you can understand why I said that Peter was the first Pope. The intention of this is so you can see where I am coming from. Consider these articles. Peter's Primacy[^] Origins of Peter as Pope[^] Peter and the papacy[^] I know this is a bunch of reading, but hopefully you can print these articles and sit down with a cup of tea/coffee/beverage and read through it. If you have any articles for me to read that would state the contrary I would love to take a look. I enjoy reading! :) Thanks for the correction by the way! As I stated in a my previous message we are all fallible people including myself! :)

Yes, I know what the Catholics say about Peter. It isn't correct though. That's all.

Funnily enough, I believe they say similar things about your religion as well. Isn't it amazing? One God, and yet every religion thinks that only they are right?

I'm surprised that you're surprised. :) There are tons of articles, but Wiki has an article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope[^] It states "The earliest record of the use of this title was in regard to the by then deceased Patriarch of Alexandria, Pope Heraclas of Alexandria (232–248)" But most importantly, the Bible says nothing of popes. If the Church continued uninterrupted, why is there no more Bible? Catholics are the only ones who believe Peter was a pope. All other Christians do not believe that Peter was a pope which is why I say there are tons of articles on it and is a very common belief, at least outside the Catholic church.

Sort of. I get your point, but oddly enough, most people I have asked say the think their religion is good, but most people know it probably is not the true church. That could be a fun exercise for you, ask people if they believe Christ is at the head of their church, just like in the days of the Bible. You may be surprised to see how few people actually do believe their church is the true church.
