Hello. This is no fun but I wonder if there is a public web-searchable - or other "inquire-able" - way to find out if a person has been incarcerated in the state of New York. And if he/she is not, could such inquiries/searches get this person into any trouble? A person dear to me, across the Atlantic, has vanished from the face of the earth. Thanks a bunch.

Usually one would first call the hospitals in the area. After that, the neighbours would be getting a call. Is there any reason you're expecting incarceration?

Well, given the numbers involved[^], you're right not to try to do it by phone. I love this statement to bits:

In the last forty years, incarceration has increased with rates upwards of 500% despite crime rates decreasing nationally.

Looks like regularly scheduled maintenance intervals. 15 minutes on weekdays, 60 on weekends. It'd be interesting to see if it'a actually always down the interval, or just that they're not promising anything during that time period.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. Living in NYC is indistinguishable from incarceration, but with the disadvantage that you don't turn up on any search engine (unless you're the tweety type), and nobody gives you food for free. (with apologies to the OP, sorry about your loved one's misfortune)
