Government, whilst necessary, will always be inherently flawed regardless of who you put in charge, be they a lying politician or a blinkered technocrat. What we have might be bad but I really don't think putting a bunch of environmentalists or unix geeks or theoretical physicists in charge will help: why would they know more about life and running a country than a self-serving politician?

Government, whilst necessary, will always be inherently flawed regardless of who you put in charge, be they a lying politician or a blinkered technocrat. What we have might be bad but I really don't think putting a bunch of environmentalists or unix geeks or theoretical physicists in charge will help: why would they know more about life and running a country than a self-serving politician?

Please please please Unix geeks! They’d create a platform which is stable, reliable and secure, and just let specialists collaborate via simple yet powerful mechanisms (a.k.a. pipes) to solve actual government issues. That’d be the best government ever.

Right off, I don't think democracy is failing. It is simply being a "democracy"... I'd vote for a benevolent dictatorship as the best form of government; however, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely! Let's stay with something we can all vote on and complain about :cool:

We'd have endless arguments over whether the list of constitutional amendements should begin with a 1 or a 0. Senator 1: I move that we adopt amendment 1 protecting the rights of Linux users to date. Senator 2: Do you mean the first amendment or the second amendment?

Well, the biggest problem I can see is that it would be ruled by an elite group that wouldn't want any more people involved in the policies that would be imposed. With democracy, along with the idiots who never should have been elected in the first place, you get the occasional intelligent politician along with the dashed hope of getting logical rules in government.

First, technology does not solve problems. It facilitates solutions which are created by people (as are many of the problems, of course.) Second: the scientific method to solving social problems Science is in not the appropriate "technology" to solve social problems. People are. You can't solve social problems with Seldon-esque psycho-history and the like. Marc

I really wait for mathematicians and programmers to start writing laws. The rules are very ambiguous - you can see this even if you're not a lawyer. Maybe the lawyers make such rules for themselves, maybe it's a sincere stupidity. Could programmers rewrite laws using some formal language? Then we could use some algorithms to find all ambiguities and inconsistencies. And above all, we could always know what this law means!

Aside from that the people running the technocracy are likely to still be human, and thus prone to humanity's usual defects?
