Google Photos has a REALLY long way to go before one can consider it going forward! It is a piece of crap compared to the excellent PICASA service they're considering dropping...

With Yahoo in financial trouble, maybe it is a way to move forward on a few projects!? If the tool is any good, people should be willing to put up a bit of cash for it.

Or large volumes of digital images. Our Sony A7R II generates 80MB RAW images. By the time you get done processing these through TIF/FIT/PSD format to final results you've probably used up 250MB per picture...

We have one desktop set up with 8TB of SSD's to do the initial heavy duty video processing. We've replaced all the hard drives in our laptops and other desktops with 500GB or 1TB SSD's. I can see us upgrading the 500GB SSD's to 1TB SSD's in the not too distant future; probably by upgrading our video processing PC to 2-4TB SSD's and moving the 1TB SSD's to the laptops and other desktops.

We have 8TB of SSD's installed and feel a storage crunch every week or so when processing a chunk of 4K video, which does love storage... Whenever a crunch occurs we roll SSD storage to hard drive backup. It is, however, nice 1TB SSD's have finally dropped below $200. I'm waiting for the 16TB SSD to arrive at a realistic price, but we'll probably be processing 8K video by then and still be out of space! :( bwa

"You've frustrated me a little because I'm pretty sure I'd do good at your company (well, I don't know what you do, but let's say for a moment it's something I know), but I'm not getting in because I lack the required education." I don't know what you do at your current company but I know a proficiency in math & physics, system analysis/design, etc. is a necessary requirement in our area of expertise, i.e.: reservoir simulation models, refinery modelling, mechanical vibration analysis, oil & gas economics simulation models, etc. In most cases a two year Technical degree simply doesn't work out well...

Sander, We only hire IT personnel with at least a B.Sc. in Computer Science and a strong indicator for artistic talent. We want a "creative/intelligent" person with a formal Computer Science education; someone to whom we can assign a project, and have him/her design a solution and carry it through to a final application (or system). Add the experience gained from varied development projects and you have a powerful development team. Maybe we are being narrow-minded? But in the 40+ years I've been in this business this approach has worked out the best for us and people we've hired, some of whom have been with us for 30+ years. bwa

Formal schooling means the world! It means a person has the capacity to think and a solid knowledge base as a foundation on which to add experience. I've fired far too many "experts" that think experience is the total package. It isn't! As for your "couple of years", a university degree is four years. A couple of years indicates a technical school certificate which means close to nothing in our organization(s). It might be good for an automobile mechanic, electrician or plumber but not for computer science!

Pretty much anything an Engineer can think up for which to write software. Everything from converting a sophisticated Excel spreadsheet to a corporate application to writing a simulation model for economics or some process in the Oil & Gas industry. We normally hire B.Sc. Computer Science grads and offer funding to complete a M.Sc. if the individual wishes to go that route. But a smart, creative B.Sc. individual can work wonders!

Artistic talent is normally a good indication of creativity. That and good math skills are what we've found yields the best software developer / programmer. If I require a "plugger", I can hire an Engineer.

When hiring for computer science positions in the Engineering field, math and artistic talent are the two most important things we look at. No math talent, no artistic talent, no interest!

Why would anyone go to the bother of upgrading all their equipment to Win 7 or Win 8 to simply install a Win XP virtual machine and run it when we already have the hardware up and running Win XP. What a stupid, computer geek idea! Have you EVER run a profitable company!?

Yes, I am "confusing" the computer with an operating entity. If the computer doesn't work, neither does the entity. Glad your life is so simple!

If this is so obvious please find us some 64 bit drivers for our Mitsubichi Dye Sub printers... And while you're at it how about some drivers for our photo processing equipment, circa 1995 MSDOS drivers which run nicely under Win XP. We have the latest version of the Win XP drivers and the install media. They won't even install on Win 7 or 8.1! Alternatively, you could just send us the $$$'s to buy the latest printers and peripheral equipment. Glad it is so "obvious" to you...

Well said! In our case it isn't Win 7 or Win 8 that is costly. It IS all the hardware we have to change out because the new versions of Windows don't have drivers for the equipment. $100 for Win 7 or 8 AND $10,000 for equipment. NOT a good business case!! Sorry, not going to happen in the foreseeable future!

  • Does anyone code with LISP?
    B bwallan

Since Alan K. was playing around with LISP in the late 1960's, I would assume the quote came from around then. LISP appears to be one of most enduring languages (along with Fortran), originating in 1958. Reading the Wikipedia article on LISP it would look like it has had a resurgence in recent years. I might dig up my old LISP code and see if it is still viable... :) bwa
