It started off being WAY too far. Besides, a joke is a joke. People who take offense to them have a stick wedged way too far up their ass. I'm of German-Ukranian descent and you know what? When people tell German or Ukranian jokes around me, I laugh (well, as long as they're funny -- there are non-offensive jokes that aren't funny, and I don't laugh at those either). People just want one more thing to complain about, and take out their own insecurities and feelings of inferiority out on others. That's the whole basis of political correctness, and I'm not afraid to point it out.

How about organized on CP but stored on another site such as YouTube? Each video tutorial would have a page here with additional information, downloads, and discussion, but the actual video would be hosted by YouTube and simply displayed on the CP page. That should work, right?

It may have worked nicely in SP1, but XPSP2 is just as bad. I was hoping that Vista had fixed the problem with folder customization, but guess not! It'd be nice to just go back to using Desktop.ini for folder configuration. :(

But HTMLHelp has been around since what, Win98? You've had 9 years to convert to a much better help format and reader. Classic WinHelp is just god-awful and I've been saddened by every application I've used that continues to use that old format for help -- especially those that have been created since HTMLHelp matured.

    C Chris Charabaruk

Has anyone ever tried to use the Text Object Model[^] with a RichTextBox? Personally, I like the TOM much more than the manipulations allowed through normal interaction with the RichTextBox but I just can't seem to find any way to get to ITextDocument in .NET. Has anyone ever attempted this before and lived to tell the tale? I doubt that I'm the only person who ever wanted a DOM for rich text in a .NET app...

  • RAR vs ZIP
    C Chris Charabaruk

You kiddin'? When it comes to UI, WinZip is an absolute dog of an application. If I didn't have WinRAR or 7ZFM on my system, I'd do all my zipping and unzipping at the command prompt (seriously, I have and I would again). As for the ubiquity of RAR, WinZip even supports opening RAR files now, and 7ZFM has for as long as I've had it.

To be honest, I much prefer the WinRAR user interface to the 7-Zip File Manager (or whatever they call it). If WinRAR let me make 7z files, I'd be in heaven.

Well, when we had our club elections back in June, it was suggested I run for President (by our current Pres, no less), but I've only been a member since April and so was wary of shooting straight for the top just like that. I'll probably run for VP Membership next year, though. By the way, mind if you ask where you are in the curriculum? I'm almost half-way done my first CC, and about 1/5 of the way through the new CL program.

PowerPoint can actually be a useful tool for presentations when properly used. The problem is that not too many people know how to use it to improve a presentation, and as a result, good presentations with PowerPoint are quite rare. I've seen some good PP presentations, and I've seen awful ones. I've personally given both types of presentations. The trick is using the slides to reinforce the point the presenter is making rather than letting the slides be the presentation itself.

I'd have to disagree on this one. In fact, I've found that ad libbing can actually improve the presentation -- you simply need to be comfortable with the information you are presenting. Normally when I give a speech or other presentation, I don't even bother writing out a complete script. Rather, I simply write an introduction and conclusion, and use an outline with bullet points for the body of the speech. As for point 5, this is only useful when you don't already know your audience. Which should be almost never. If you have time to prepare a presentation, you have time to research who your audience is, so that you can tune the presentation to suit.

  • Games in C# is it even Possible
    C Chris Charabaruk

Puh-leeze. C# isn't faster or slower than any other language, it's all in how it's used. I developed a little game in 3 days that used only 2D graphics with the help of SDL.NET, and it struggles at 30 FPS. I've seen MDX and Tao.OpenGL that just fly. C# is a perfectly good language for game development, concerns about resource & memory management or no.

  • Games in C# is it even Possible
    C Chris Charabaruk

Actually, with a game, you shouldn't dispose resources as soon as you're finished with it. If possible, you should make sure the GC doesn't, either. The idea is to dispose unused resources during a transition (those times when the loading screen pops up) so as to avoid hiccups in the frame rate. It's not all that important when it's just one or two little resources but if you're clearing out game resources in bulk players will notice. Same goes for loading them.
