  • My uncle fell down the stairs...
    C Craig Robbins

Yep - Fell from a 6 foot step ladder while hanging Christmas lights about 20 years ago resulting in 7 broken ribs, broken wrist, collapsed lung. Of course I was acting immortal (being STUPID) and standing on the "Do not stand on this step" very top step and reaching up at the time.... My side still aches occasionally to remind me that I am not, in fact, immortal. I'm still pretty stupid tho... Best wishes everyone - Craig

The basic lumber for building here in the US is called a "2 by 4" -- a piece of wood (usually pine) that many years ago was 2 inches by 4 inches by some length (such as 8 feet long). Today that piece of wood in a lumber yard is actually 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches by some length. Not sure why the size shrunk other than saving a few dollars for the lumber mill. As a typically uninformed American, what is the basic equivalent piece of lumber elsewhere in the world? These are the deep questions retirement allows me to ponder. Good Morning Jeremy, Have you had the opportunity to "test" your setup with a real power failure? I am curious as to how well it worked, and if the pretty lights looked nice in the dark :) Best wishes from Minnesota, Craig

I hurt my back so my activites are limited. I am cleaning some old hand tools that belonged to my grandfathers. I have a pair of wire cutters stamped BELL SYSTEM (which was THE telephone company in the US once upon a time). They are also stamped F.E. LINDSTROM SWEDEN on the other side. Research (ok, just Google search) tells me that the Bell System had high quality tools made to their specifications for their service personnel. These particular wire cutters look to be at least 60 years old. I've seen similar tools for US auto manufacturers, as well as IBM labeled tools carried by IBM's customer service representatives. I'm curious as to whether putting business logos with tools made to a customer's specifications was just a US thing or was once a common business practice around the world. Best Wishes - Craig

  • Why don't the British drink cold beer?
    C Craig Robbins

100% agree with you - I don't find any of the major American beers worth drinking any more. Red and brown ales, Guinness, bourbon barrel aged products. No IPA's -- can't take the hop bombs. Best wishes from rainy Minnesota!

In the early 70's (I was a young nerdy teenager) my father's employer (Control Data Corp.) moved our family from Maryland to Minnesota. Mom and Dad always talked of moving back east after retirement - hoping to live in Virginia or the Carolinas. They loved the beautiful old mountains and hills. Grandchildren and other stuff changed their plans and they never left Minnesota. :rose::rose:

I've found that for some of these systems if I pound on the '*' key on the phone's keypad, I bypass the fricking "press 1 for xxxxx, press 2 for yyyyy" and go right to a (not necessarily competent nor understandable) human service rep.
