  • Knowledge sharing at the job?
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

Unfortunately, in most companies I have worked for, keeping current was seen as a bad thing, something that distracts you from the job currently at hand.

  • Javascript brace style - THAT discussion probably again
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

Yes, it is the "correct" style for Javascript, even though I hate using it. When I program in other languages, I always use a new line for a brace, either opening brace or closing brace. But in Javascript, if you use the opening brace in a new line, Javascript may automatically insert a semicolon in the previous line. Try searching the Internet about this "feature". For example, you may consult javascript - Why does a results vary based on curly brace placement? - Stack Overflow[^]

  • How to help students with: taking the assignment too literally
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

In order to prevent students from taking the assignment too literally, give them examples. I mean, give them an example of an assignment, then give them a solution for this assignment that corresponds to taking the assignment too literally, and after that give them a solution that you think is way more appropriate. Then do this with another example assignment, and its own solutions that are "too literal" and that are "appropriate". Then do this with yet another example assignment, and its own solutions that are "too literal" and that are "appropriate". If you do this a few times, the students will eventually understand.

    D Dimitrios Kalemis

Thank you for sharing! Your method (the Clifton Method of software implementation) is really impressive! By the way, the last link you gave me is missing an "s" from the end. It should be: https://github.com/cliftonm/clifton/blob/master/Clifton.Web/Clifton.WebServerService/WebServer.cs Thank you again!

What language do you use to write the handlers for your REST calls on the server side? Is it C#? If so, how do you do it, since you do not use ASP.NET and IIS?

  • Office politics and sh*tty code.
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

There are some fancy judo mind tricks, but they only work on clever people. In your situation, it is impossible to get your points through. Forget about them. Leave. Actually, if you want, before you leave, you might prepare a detailed document, explaining the shortcomings and the ways that they can be fixed. And hand the document to them, in an email. This way, they will think twice before saying anything negative about you in the future. You see, the written word has power and ability to persist over the years. Later on, you might need proof that you did make your points and arguments. Please read the following, to understand the importance of documenting your views for the future: Your Software is Never Perfect

    The Lounge question

  • Programming vs Networking (just in terms of difficulty)?
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

This is a question that you should answer for yourself after obtaining a bit of background in both areas. I encourage you to get involved in both areas. After a while, you will get to understand which of the two is a good fit for you. The answer that you come up with will be specific to you and to no one else. Different people have different backgrounds and consider different things to be interesting or boring, difficult or hard. So go ahead and get involved in the areas that you think might interest you and might be a good fit for you. After a while you will know if an area is a good match for you or not. But be careful. The answers you find may be useful only to you. Other people may come up with completely different answers for themselves.

  • Stackoverflow website sucks because of its moderators and Top Users
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

Unfortunately, this also happens in Code Project. And it deeply, deeply saddens me. Code Project has the best newsletters, but not the best forums. A lot of the people who participate in CP forums have the worst attitude towards ignorance. This is why I rarely participate in discussions in Code Project. The attitude from a lot of my peers here is appaling. Anyway, I always say: "Ignorance is sacred. But not wanting to learn is wrong."

    The Lounge question

  • Why most people here dislike Facebook?
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

I do not like the UI and the features. I have always been saying that "Facebook is a bad application" and meant every word. Facebook is an application, not just a site. So far, so good. Facebook's UI is bad, prohibiting, and unintuitive. But I also dislike the way it lets people approach and relate to other people.

  • is something wrong with me ?
    D Dimitrios Kalemis

There is nothing wrong with you. You felt that the questions did not correspond to your way of thinking and your way of looking at the job and of approaching the situations at hand. Thus, you had to reject the job. Most interview questions have long been *extremely* inadequate at judging prospective employers, something that Microsoft and Google have now began to realize and change. I wish that everyone was like you. You disagree with something and you stand up to it with courage and state your opinion. No, there is nothing wrong with you. What you have is integrity. There is nothing wrong with that.

    D Dimitrios Kalemis

Clearly, you and your boss do not "see eye to eye". You and your boss cannot communicate with each other. I am blaming neither you nor your boss. But you should quit your job. This is the best thing you can do. Otherwise, you will be perpetuating a bad situation that should better stop.
