Try Maine Coons (we breed them). Their goal in life is to ensure that every horizontal surface is cleared of anything that can move. For Maine Coons that encompasses rather large kitchen appliances.

My cat is getting weirder -
Software Bloat.I totally agree. I'm on my Second Stream now (it's well over 40 years since I left school). After decades as a hands on CTO at startups I decided to go into embedded systems; which is really what my degree was in. I've maintained this as a hobby, so I'm up to date-ish. However the jobs available weren't fully remote (understandable with some hardware) and were a three hour commute away (on a good day) and paid considerably less than the architecture job I took. I'm happy enough; I'm in a company way larger than startups so I don't have to do literally everything; but small enough that I can do interesting work, explore new ideas and manage my team with a light touch.

That's 128 times the RAM in my first computer! (ZX81)

Keeping trackIt sounds like you need an Application Portfolio Management (APM) tool. These track applications and all the relationships between them and attributes that you'd need. However, they're expensive. I'm only aware of one open source tool, Essential Project. Unfortunately it's a pain to install and a bigger pain to use. There's a paid for version with web tooling but I doubt you want to throw USD $19,000 at this. To be honest your idea of a spreadsheet sounds feasible if you keep your aims basic. Search for APM tools; companies like BizzDesign, Value Blue and Qualiware have decent APM tools and lots of freely available information that'll give you a good idea of what you'll want to track.

Ahh ... plagiarists and cheats don't always get what they want.I had the same thing marking OU assignments many years ago. I had about 20 papers to mark and at one point thought I'd incorrectly put one in the wrong pile as I was sure I'd seen it before (it had a few unique errors that stood out). I also did my marking in the pub, but that's another story... So, two almost identical papers. After being reported they claimed they didn't know each other, despite sitting beside each other at every tutorial. They were told there were 60 marks available for the joint paper and would they care to let us know how the wished the marks proportioned between them. They stuck to their story and got 30 marks each, along with a final warning.

Little victories and an askUntil very recently I've been maintaining a Windows project (UI, hooks, COM, all the fun stuff) that I started selling in 2008. If I hadn't checked in the exes for some of the utilities needed (installer tools, license stuff, etc.) I would have been screwed! Yes, I could have modernised it and removed many of them, but it simply didn't make commercial sense to do that. Purity is all well and good, but at the end of the day shipping software wins over intellectual mas rigour.

Me too. I feel a bit younger after reading all these posts; I didn't see Adventure until the BBC micro port.

WSO CCC OTD 2023-08-23Has enough time gone by to ask for an explanation? I've got the answer, and I can see how the Short Day and "met conditions" works. But beyond possibly rhyming with the answer the "butcher dies" is escaping me! thanks.
