Another thing to consider... Just because the VS Installer is pulling the packages and running the install for you, the .NET packages are available separately and cover multiple platforms. The packages themselves are not all VS and platform specific...

MS still tests things... they just outsourced it to their customers. Kinda like Seagate did with their MFM/RLL drives back in the late 80s/early 90s...

I foresee a coming opportunity for programmers to replace all the school system tools (and probably more than a few "enterprise business" apps) that still require flash to work... Might rival some of the Y2k efforts, just after the event rather than before.

Seconding this point... but to one of the original concerns, if you are afraid to write, it's hard to have someone review it to give you that advice... Additionally, be objective with the response you get. When you create something, there's a tendency to fall in love with it. Be prepared to throw something you wrote out and start over.
