That's all nothing. Some years ago, a multinational I did some work for decided to completely change its messaging infrastructure. Another multinational was going to be the service provider, and yet another multinational was going to perform the transition. During the second day of the transition, something bad happened. Whatever it was, it left half of all employees (several tens of thousands of people) of the multinational changing its messaging system without email. One day later, the CEOs of the three multinationals were in a meeting. Almost one more week passed before email service was restored to all employees. I think it wasn't just me, but all contractors becoming aware of the problem who had a good laugh on the issue. I can't understand to this day why they went ahead with the migration.

I wonder exactly how many applications I have written in those 45 years? (It's got to be in the hundreds) ... and when you count up how many systems they have run on - one app alone ran on several hundred workstations!

I saw it, but (to me, at least) it's the kind of question that you have to be sitting at the machine in question to be able to have an idea what is going on. My first thought was that the antivirus had changed the setting of some service or other, but to check that, I'd need to take a record of what was running (and in what mode) in services.msc, then roll back to see what had changed -- but it was probably already too late to do that, so I was out of solutions. We tend to assume, here, that if we can't answer a specific question, then someone else will be able to, so we either don't respond, or we make a joke of it. I'm sure no offence was intended. A web service, or a windows service? Do you have any of the related source code, and if so, for what components? Do you have access to the machine on which the service is running? My guess is that your problems may be connected to user privileges. One way around this is to write a windows service that replaces the scheduler/batch file mechanism so that your scheduling service can do what it needs to do.
