I am Software Developer ?I can tell you that the only reason I got that university education is that I found I needed the piece of paper to get my foot in the door. What got me the job was what I had learned in spite of the university.

The question you should ask at your next interview...Code review? I think it is a big musical show with lots of girls in bathing suits. At least that is what I remember from watching TMC :-D

Need a new word mean "it worked first time and that's crazy because I just wrote the code in one hit and just compiled and ran it"Just remember the words of that great philosopher, Hans Solo "Great kid. Now don't get cocky" :)

we do it not because it is easy, but because it is hardI know my limitations. I'm not the strategic type of person. I'm a tactician. I'm not much on being able to come up with the ideas, but I can make things happen.

we do it not because it is easy, but because it is hardI was listening to talk radio this morning and the monologue hit a sore point with me. They were talking about the words to songs like "Impossible dream" and "I did it my way". They were talking about making a difference and chasing the impossible dream. This got me to thinking. I realized I've spent the last 25 or so years trying to find a company to work for that was willing to take risks and shoot for the moon. I realize that I haven't been able to find any. I haven't found a company like Edison that was willing to fail numerous times for that chance at one success. Willing to take a chance at shooting the moon, because it is too risky. We have no one that would be willing to try to land on the moon today. And I realized that the reason there is no companies like this anymore, is that they only worry about the bottom line. They no longer care to challenge or make a real difference. Only make more money. Am I wrong here? Are there companies that are willing to take these kind of risks? Maybe I'm just too cynical in my years. -- J Julian

Are your former companies still around?I've been at this 34 years. Companies: 11 (not counting current position) Still around: 7 The companies that are not around any more were mostly not small companies, but stripped for their assets and left to rot. Didn't take long.

Your brain doesn't work right...Ok. That's it. Now I'll be singing "Hi, my name is Joe, and I work...." for the rest of the day. You are hereby sentenced to work in nothing but Dartmouth BASIC and all the legacy code is nothing but GOTOs. :~

Open Letter to All IT Recruiting AgenciesJohn, I'm afraid you will find that a lot of the "recruiters" today are not professionals in the field they are recruiting for (not all, but most). Most of them (especially the new ones) have shifted from selling homes (which went south a few years ago) to that most lucrative recruiting gig. I truly believe that they feel it can't be that hard. They seem to have no clue how the industry works or what the words mean. I've had to educate a few, and it is very frustrating. Not like the good old days when the recruiters were true professionals that knew the business, not someone just trying to move bodies, hoping one sticks. John Julian

SCRUMmy DevelopmentThe thing that I've noticed is that the goal of this method of development is to show progress, no matter what the cost. I've seen numerous times where doing something the right way and preparing for maintainability and expandability is thrown by the wayside and even ridiculed in the effort to meet "goals". So when it comes time for the next sprint, the work that was just completed is thrown out, or totally rewritten, and what is usually ended up with is patchwork code because we didn't have the time to do it right. In my opinion, I see this method as a unguided accumulation of technical debt that may or may not ever get paid.
