Paul Watson wrote: Glad to hear you are getting your priorities straight again Exactly, this is all an exercise in priorities. For instance, I am presently supposed to be inputting notes for my time log so our accounting department can finish billing. See how my priorities are sorting out. Paul Watson wrote: Went to Greece, met a German girl, had a blast. Damn! I never thought to go to Greece to meet a German girl! I always figured that I would need to go to Germany to do that. ;p I really need to figure out how to take a vacation here soon. I have 15 days of sick leave/vacation saved up and it disappears at the end of the year if I don't take it. Going to Greece is, unfortunately, not in the cards. Or at least not in the pocket book. If I could only afford the flight over I am sure I could afford to get smashed and play the tourist in Cape Town, but that flight is a killer, so I am afraid we'll have to put off having a beer at your local pub. :sigh: Anyway, I'm off to explain what I did with my time over the last two weeks. (Ah, the life of a consultant.)

I have been trying to come back for about two months now. I have only managed to start making regular time for CP in the last couple of weeks though. I have been trying to answer questions where I can and read what I can to catch up. Basically for the last year+ I have been so swamped in work that I have not had time to do anything else. I am only just starting to get my life, (read work), far enough under control to allow for time to do anything but fix friggin computers. :( No time for my car, no time for my programming, no time for Neverwinter Nights, NO TIME!!! ahem, sorry about that. can you tell that the lack of time to work on my own things has been driving me a little batty? ;p But I am getting things under control. I have managed to find time to fix virtually all of the car issues I was having. I have managed to get a character going in NN. And I am finally back on CP! :-D How are things going with you Mr. Watson?

Yes, Thunderbird rocks! :) I am riotously happy with Thunderbird as my e-mail client. The Get Messages issue above is the only one that bothers me too. It just keeps getting better and better as they rev it, but the current milestone build is very stable. I have not had a single problem with it so far. The Junk Mail filter is a godsend. :)

No sweat, I understand. Why do you think I haven't had time to try it either? :-D They just told me the other day that I have to fix a bug in the in-house software app, do a full software audit of our place, build a database to store the audit information, and build an installshield installer for our web app. All by the end of next week. Along with all my admin duties. Now I am just waiting for someone to come by and ask me when the new Exchange server will be ready to deploy. Can we say swimming upstream? :)

Ista wrote: one thing you mentioned Terminal Services where as he installed Remote Desktop. In my situation is that identical? In your situation that is identical. The server is a "Terminal Services" server. Your client is a "Terminal Services" client that is now called "Remote Desktop Connection", probably because Microsoft likes us to be confused. ;p I actually expected them to rename "Terminal Services" server to "Remote Desktop" server in Win2003, but according to Matt they haven't. *shrug*

  • Network Profiles
    J Jason Jystad

Ah, so they have static addresses at work and the one you have at home is set up for DHCP. Now I follow you. One way to try to configure this is buy setting up the "General" tab in the TCP/IP properties for DHCP and then go to the "Alternate Information" tab (Something like that anyway, its the secon tab in the TCP/IP properties) and input the static information from work. This should cause it to query for DHCP information first, so this would get him on the network at home, and if that failed it would try to use the static address in the alternate tab which should get him on the network at work. That is how it is supposed to work anyway. :) Or you could try something like this program: http://www.netswitcher.com/[^] (I have never used it but it looks interesting). Let me know how it goes, I am curious to see if either of these work for you.

  • TerminalServices ? Remote Desktop
    J Jason Jystad

Ah, OK. Then ignore all of the crap about one user at a time. It is irrelevant to your situation. :) When connecting to a Terminal Services server from a client, (This is your situation), the server creates an independant login session for each user. This includes all of your own settings and desktop and such, just as though you had logged onto the server directly from the console. You can run programs, install things (in a limited manner), and generally fool around without messing with any other users who might be logged in. Of course if you reboot the machine or something the other users will tend to get cross with you, but that probably goes without saying. ;p One thing that is good to know, if you have programs running and close your client without logging off then your programs will sit in memory and continue to run until either you log back in and close them down or the server or server administrator resets your session. If you leave sessions running, you run the risk that they will be reset on you. This does not perform a graceful shutdown on your programs, it is more like hitting the reset button on your computer right in the middle of typeing a sentence. Basically it is safest to just get in the habit of always closing your Remote Desktop session by logging out of the computer you are connected too. That way you never have to worry about things like forced resets or rogue sessions. Anything else you want to know?

  • TerminalServices ? Remote Desktop
    J Jason Jystad

Ista wrote: If I have services running through com+ and someone logs in will it log them off and corrupt my services? No, taking over the desktop will not end any programs/services/thingees. At least it hasn't happened to me yet. It basically just takes over the computer and instead of sending the desktop images to the screen on the machine it sends them to the controlling RDP client. When this is happening it shows a "This workstation has been locked" message on the controlled desktop. Ista wrote: Also, what if Someone is at the pc using it when I log on to the pc. Will thier session be logged or can someone physically use it while I do with Remot desktop? Their session will not be logged off, you would just take it over. Also, they have to agree to let you take it over, you just can't jerk it away from them. :) No they can not work at their desktop while you are controlling their XP machine. You will be the only one seeing their desktop while you have remote control. All of this confusing crap about one login only applies to using Remote Desktop to work with an XP machine remotely. Not working from an XP machine, (or other compatible windows machine), to a windows server. When you are working with a windows server remotely, then someone could be working on the console, someone else could be working via the remote client, and you could be working via the remote client. All of this could be happening at the same time and your various sessions would not interact at all. Well, aside from stealing processor ticks and memory from each other.

  • Peak Memory Usage
    J Jason Jystad

Not really sure, perhaps because many programs expand to take up more memory and fail to let go of it again later? (*cough* MSWord *cough*) :) Seriously though, it doesn't seemto be that way on my machine, the "Mem Usage" which shows the total amount currently in use is going up and down as my machine runs. Not just when I open or close programs either, when I close one of three web pages I have open it goes down even though the browser does not actually unload. What OS are you using? (Win2k here)
