How about neither of them? Being so "brilliant", I can get a higher paying job, if that's what's really important. However, if I'm not "actuall a shmuck deep down", then maybe I don't care about the money, so long as I'm doing well enough and living in a place that I like. Perhaps I'll be a university professor doing research for far less than 180,000.

Puzzle of the day :ANSWER POSTED -
TV QuestionsDavid Knechtges wrote:
Also make absolutely sure that the TV you purchase has an HDMI input with HDCP (since the content companies are making this a requirement to watch the new high def DVDs in full resolution). Neither of mine do, since I got them before this stupid requirement, and now I am stuck having to shell out the bucks again for another TV! ARGH!
Another option is to just forgo the HD/BD dvd's since they are evil. If nobody buys these restricted pieces of garbage (a sad bit of optimism on my part) then they'll have to remove the requirement so that people will then go out and buy the content. Don't feed the beast.

Igor Vigdorchik wrote: high-definition optical discs would be entirely off-limits on Windows computers So?
I concur. What would be so bad about that? I don't need it, and I'm not willing to suffer to get it. Let bad formats die the death they deserve. I'll keep watching DVDs until something reasonable comes along.

Microsoft ISV Emporer & VistaWhy not just use the System Builder Licences? If you're just running this as normal ol' standalone machine, then go for the cheapest thing possible. Directron is offering XP with a Vista Upgrade Coupon. $132 sets you up (apparently for both?) I don't really get what the coupon offer is giving you, but presumably you'll get at least a discount on Vista. http://www.directron.com/oemxpro2v1pk.html[^]

Hardware QuestionA lot of motherboards have some sort of debug code readout. Look for some lit up hex digits somewhere on the board. If it's not there, and the board is dead, then I'd recommend a replacement which does have such a readout - they can be fairly useful when building your own systems.

I hate floating point operationsAlso don't forget - There is a wave nature to light. The universe may be considered discreet for SOME applications, but there is a duality to matter. Every object has a wavelength... I suppose we don't need calculus anymore - what use are derivatives anyway? We'll just cut everything into super tiny rectangles, since a wave can't have a continuous curve...What was Newton thinking?

Top 10 IT Companies ?Looking for a top 10 international mega-corp, which is good for job growth...Those seem pretty contradictory. If you're really looking for good experience you'll need to find something smaller where you won't be a cog in the vast machine. Those companies don't show up on rankings.

Aspect ratioJeffry J. Brickley wrote:
the same aspect ratio as the scene it was taken in. Seriously. If you take a panorama image and you scale it to 4:3 it looks squashed.
Correct, but that would be a stretch not a scale. You should almost never stretch an image, particularly a photo, because it will always look horrible. I think this is a problem with some crappy software painting an image into a predefined rectangle, without regard to the aspect of the image it has loaded. That would be a no-no. Although to be fair - it's not always made easy. If you look at System.Drawing.Graphics.DrawImage, for instance, it doesn't really allow you to maintain aspect - you have to do that yourself. J

Idea for websiteActually thedailywtf[^] is now trying to have a similar service, where they're posting jobs for employers who are certified as not being a "WTF" kind of place. J

Experts create invisibility cloakVery true...But still promising since visible light is just a different part of the spectrum. Also, if you wanted to be difficult, you could say that invisibility doesn't just apply to the spectrum perceived by human beings. J

Static constructors in C# will be the death of meNow, now...Let's not go getting angry. I think there are 2 reasons. First off, they function similarly to ObjectMain in COM, so they were kinda copying that pattern. Second, and more importantly - what order would you like your objects to be called in? You could open a whole rats nest by having various static constructors referencing static members in all your different classes. That's a messy situation that's best left avoided. J

Laser TV - Good-bye PlasmaNo mention of "burn-in". If these things scar themselves in the first six months of use, then I'll forget about it (I already won't touch plasma). But since they're using colored light sources, maybe there's hope... J

Pay me to learnA good employer will already take learning time into account. You probably can't be completely "green" when it comes to any sort of work that your new employer is doing, but so long as you bring something to the table, anybody worth working for would be willing to take a shot on you(provided you have the background, etc...to show you can do it). For instance, I never really did any C#, but I had plenty of COM. My current place saw the connection, and brought me on under the assumption that my basic engineering skills were good enough, and I'd learn the symantics as I went. Best thing to do, is start looking, and go for it with the companies/technologies you're interested in. If you're not in a rush, you'll eventually come upon something that will work out beautifully. Good Luck, J

Quick Poll6 for now... 1. File Server - athlon 2. Performance Machine - athlon, dev and gaming 3. Media PC for living room - athlon 4. Personal Laptop - dell 5. Fiances Laptop - dell 6. An old POS dell(PIII) that doesn't get used much (fiance's old machine) And it will probably expand soon since the performance machine is getting on in age. It'll shift to a second file server and be replaced by something multi-core. But maybe then I'll dump the old dell. I don't think I'll ever get below 4-5 machines so long as I keep dedicated Media PC's for TV. J

So today was my big dayTaka Muraoka wrote:
Rubbish. Where was his personal attack on you?
More Rubbish. He asked how he could have given offense since he first said "I don't mean to give offense." I merely provided an example whereby I first state that I mean no offense, and proceed to offend. The content and form offense was irrelevant. And don't pretend for one second that he had no intention of inflaming anyone with that post. That is either an insult to everyone else's intelligence, a sad commentary on HIS intelligence, or a terrible display of your own. Let's remember what the topic on this thread was - Someone was glad to have acheived something, on a friday night, and was feeling good about it. Why in the world would somebody go and crap all over it if they weren't trying to cause trouble, unless he is just the most socially inept bungler on the planet (a distinct possibility). He can have his opinion, I don't care. I ignore things I don't agree with all the time, but there's a time and a place for it - and it wasn't on this thread.

Then explain to me how my comments, by starting with I mean no offense, are rude, and why my opinion should be in the soap-box while yours, calling me rude and ignorant, are worthy of the lounge.
Ok, here's an example. Now, I don't mean any offense here, but you're a douche bag. See how that works? I didn't mean to be offensive by calling you a douche bag, but you may well take it in a negative light. I'm sorry about that, but I'm just trying to give my opinion...No offense intended.
