  • Web-style UI with re-flow - seen any examples?
    M Mal Ross

Thanks for the reply, but as I explained, the anchoring and docking aren't enough. Unless, that is, you're telling me to handle the Layout event and do my own layout control? But that's the example I'm hoping I can find without having to code it myself. :) Cheers, Mal.

  • Web-style UI with re-flow - seen any examples?
    M Mal Ross

Hi all, I'm looking to implement a web-style UI using Windows Forms and C#. I want my task screens' content to fill the width of the window and to reflow nicely, like a web browser. While I realise the docking features of Windows Forms are great for resizing content to fit a window, you run into problems when, say, the word-wrapping in a static text control changes such that the line count changes (2 lines become 3, for example). In such a situation, you'd want the controls below the static to shuffle up or down accordingly, but the docking properties aren't enough to cater for this. Has anyone seen any Forms code that avoids ugly spaces opening up (or conversely, overlapping controls) by correctly reflowing the form's content? Cheers, Mal.

  • I Hate the Stingray Objective Toolkit
    M Mal Ross

I have to agree with you - to a certain extent. I'm not a great fan of Objective Toolkit either. Too many things are nowhere near up to date with Windows' UI styles. I once asked when it would be getting an update to keep up with Microsoft's changing styles and to correct Toolkit's own errors and I felt they tried to call my bluff, asking for a list of required changes. So, I compiled and sent them a list, pretty much filling their web form (~4000 chars?). ;-) Sadly, I've yet to see any hint of a new release in the pipeline, although I did give up checking a few months back. That said, I disagree with you on the support thing. I think their web-based support is pretty damned good. I also think it's pretty important to make sure we don't tar their Objective Grid with the same brush as used for the Toolkit. Grid is excellent and the support for it is excellent, too. Mal.

Another free scriptable installer is Inno Setup (http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.htm), which can be scripted using TaFWeb Scripter (http://www.tafweb.com/scriptmaker.html). I've not actually used these programs yet myself, but they sound well worth a look. Mal.

  • Removing border around pages in a CPropertySheet-based wizard
    M Mal Ross

Hi all, I'm having difficulty making my wizard (based on CPropertySheet and CPropertyPage) look like the examples in Microsoft's guidelines (the Windows User Experience). According to the book, the wizard graphic at the left should extend to the top and left edges of the wizard and also down to the horizontal line that separates the page from the Back & Next buttons. However, when using MFC's support for wizards via CPropertySheet, there is always a 7DLU border added automatically around my pages, meaning that the graphic ends up 'floating' inside the wizard window, well away from its edges. Does anyone know how I can change the automatic sizing of the wizard and positioning of its pages? I still want to use CPropertySheet, mind. Cheers, Mal.

  • Best place for UI discussion (Windows UI in particular)?
    M Mal Ross

If it's any help, I've just found a mailing list for UI discussion. Details are at: http://www.uidesign.net/discussion/discussion.html I'd prefer a web forum, it's not geared towards Windows (or even GUI in general) and I don't know what sort of volume or quality of discussion to expect yet, but it might be worth looking into. Mal.

  • Best place for UI discussion (Windows UI in particular)?
    M Mal Ross

There are plenty of sites on the web dedicated to contemporary web design, but what about ones for contemporary UI design, specifically in Windows? Paul Thurrott's winsupersite.com is good for keeping up to date with Microsoft's own latest developments, but what about more general UI design issues? Is there anywhere (web-site, discussion forum, mailing-list, etc) out there that's considered to be as good for discussing and sharing UI ideas as places like codeproject are for the actual coding of them? Mal.
