Agreed, MS includes too much in the basic setup, especially copilot seems to be a performance killer. That said, you can simply try to un-install any extension, if it's really needed, or something else depends on it you'll be notified. Additionally, there are plenty ways to troubleshoot extension performance and issues, but that assumes you're willing to invest some time to figure them out which may not be practical for you.

Maybe you should ditch a few extensions you don't really need. On my system (aged 4+ yrs) it starts up and loads my main project in about 2-3 seconds.

  • Why is a resource fork?
    M markchagers

As a long time Mac user I have to admit I sometimes question Apple's design decisions when a new version changes some part of the UI seemingly arbitrarily, but I've never considered switching to Windows for my personal computing needs, even though I've worked at least as much with Windows machines for much of my career. There is a lot of difference between MacOS 9 (pre-unix) and MacOS X and up (unix-based, debuted around 2001). Many of the misconceptions aired in this thread are based on the earlier incarnation of MacOS. Since OSX is essentially unix, the ancient forked file format has evolved into a container like format. Mac specific meta-data for a directory will be stored in a hidden file on non-mac drives, which irritates windows sysadmins (Macs can be configured quite easily to not write these files, but you can't expect a Windows sysadmin to find out how, apparently). What feels natural and user-friendly to you depends for a great deal on your earlier experiences. If you've been using Windows exclusively, a Mac is bound to feel somewhat unusual at first. OTOH Mac-only users (quite a rare species due to the ubiquitousness of Windows) will have far more trouble adjusting to Windows. In my experience the Finder (that survived the OSX transition) is vastly superior to the Windows Explorer. I feel much more in control of my computer on Macs than on Windows. Also in organisations that have a mix of Windows and Mac users, the latter tend to need far less support from the IT department than Windows users do. I have no ejectable drive anymore, so I can't test for the trash-can eject mechanism, but I believe that was discontinued at some point.

  • A good mouse
    M markchagers

This is not going to get much applause here, but I have used a (several) magic mouse(s) from apple. I doubt they work with win boxes. It has a few drawbacks, but one killer feature that has made me endure the drawbacks to the point where I simply buy a new one whenever the current one goes dead. The drawbacks: - it's a battery hog - it sometimes drops it's connection - it completely wears out in 3-5 years BUT: it has a touch surface on top (actually the entire top surface is touch sensitive). That means you can scroll in all directions in any application with an almost imperceptible movement of your finger across the surface, and not just scrolling, you can use it to flip through pictures in a photo's app, pages in a browser, even flip entire workspaces (with a 2-fingered gesture). I only wish they would make a wired version as that would fix drawbacks 1 and 2.

This reminds me of the earliest experiments with on-line shopping, where a physical store would be simulated in fake 3D to recreate the shopping experience. It's just not convenient, on-line shopping can be much better than a simulation of real-world shopping. Similarly, although VR can be impressive, just not every activity lends itself to be 'recreated' in VR.

  • Is it more difficult to find work as an older developer?
    M markchagers

I can only speak from personal experience. I'm 64 yrs old and have switched jobs 4 times in the last 6 years, the first time because I worked at the previous job for almost 10 years and thought a change might do me good, then two times because I didn't like the company culture and the last time was because of the covid pandemic. My last job was really pleasant and I was heartbroken when they had to let me go due to the circumstances but I landed my current job within 2 weeks after applying and I'm equally happy here. Being open to constantly learning new skills and technology is key to staying relevant, obviously, and frankly it's what has kept me going all these years. I would have died off slowly in a job where I'd have to do the same thing over and over for years on end. So yeah, if you're willing to learn new skills on a regular basis, and keep up with current tech, you can get employed even at an advanced age, at least that's the current employment situation in the Netherlands where I live.

Recently I had several changes of the email address I use to receive the CodoProject newsletter (previous work email -> home email -> current work email). I havent't received any newsletters from codeproject ever since the first of these email changes (november 2020). My current email address is verified, and I have made it the default email address for my account.

I believe the intent of the GPDR is exactly that, but the ad companies deliberately put up these huge annoying dialogs expecting people to just click OK without fully realizing what they're agreeing to. That way they're in the clear with the GPDR and can collect data to their hearts content.
